Sediment Transport in Coastal Waters
Author: Sylvain Ouillon
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3038978442
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
The interface of 440,000 km long coastline in the world is subject to global change, with an increasing human pressure (land use, buildings, sand mining, dredging) and increasing population. Improving our knowledge on involved mechanisms and sediment transport processes, monitoring the evolution of sedimentary stocks and anticipating changes in littoral and coastal zones is essential for this purpose. The special issue of Water on “Sediment transport in coastal waters” gathers thirteen papers which introduce the current revolution in the scientific research related to coastal and littoral hydrosedimentary dynamics, and reflect the diversity of concerns on which research in coastal sediment transport is based, and current trends — topics and preferred methods — to address them.

Coastal Bottom Boundary Layers And Sediment Transport
Author: Peter Nielsen
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company
ISBN: 9813103582
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 340
Book Description
This book is intended as a useful handbook for professionals and researchers in the areas of Physical Oceanography, Marine Geology, Coastal Geomorphology and Coastal Engineering and as a text for graduate students in these fields. With its emphasis on boundary layer flow and basic sediment transport modelling, it is meant to help fill the gap between general hydrodynamic texts and descriptive texts on marine and coastal sedimentary processes. The book commences with a review of coastal bottom boundary layer flows including the boundary layer interaction between waves and steady currents. The concept of eddy viscosity for these flows is discussed in depth because of its relation to sediment diffusivity. The quasi-steady processes of sediment transport over flat beds are discussed. Small scale coastal bedforms and the corresponding hydraulic roughness are described. The motion of suspended sand particles is studied in detail with emphasis on the possible suspension maintaining mechanisms in coastal flows. Sediment pickup functions are provided for unsteady flows. A new combined convection-diffusion model is provided for suspended sediment distributions. Different methods of sediment transport model building are presented together with some classical models.

Coastal Environmental Quality and Marine Biodiversity Assessment, volume II
Author: Dilip Kumar Jha
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832552579
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 136
Book Description
Large amounts of pollutants and natural disasters have been released into coastal and marine waters, wreaking havoc on the ecosystem and ecology. Pollution and habitat loss caused by humans have had and continue to have a significant impact on worldwide coastal and estuarine ecosystems. More than 80% of all marine pollution originates on land, with the majority of it coming from industrial, agricultural, and urban sources. Coastal and marine pollution is caused by human activities such as offshore oil and gas extraction and maritime oil transportation. Many of the world's estuaries and coastal zones are experiencing eutrophication, hypoxia, and other negative consequences as a result of anthropogenic activities. As a result, it's vital to avoid and regulate coastal and marine pollution, as well as build improved monitoring protocols and systems to aid in the understanding of spatial and temporal changes in coastal water quality. Recent technological advancements in coastal and marine seawater quality monitoring, such as real-time data collecting via data buoys, large-scale remote sensing intervention, automated data collection, and so on, are critical for comprehending real-time data and its influence on the environment.

Sandy Beaches as Ecosystems
Author: A. McLachlan
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401729387
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 730
Book Description
What sight is more beautiful than a high-energy beach facing lines of rolling white breakers? What battleground is more ferocious than where waves and sand meet? What environment could be more exciting to study than this sandy interface between sea and land? And yet how much do we know about sandy beaches? Open sandy beaches are amongst the most neglected fields of scientific study in the coastal environment. This situation exists despite their great extent along most temperate and tropical coastlines and their value as recreational areas and buffer zones against the sea. The traditional oceanographer does not venture into the surf zone while the terrestrial ecologist stops short at the high water mark. Only a few coastal engineers have grappled with the problem of sand and sediment movement as it influences their construction of harbours and pipelines. The marine biologist on the other hand has regarded estuaries, coral reefs and rocky shores, obviously teeming with life, as more fruitful areas for study than the apparently poor animal life on sandy beaches. Sandy beaches have therefore tended to become a scientific no man's land. Over the last decade this situation has begun to improve. Recent work on high-energy beaches has revealed that they may in fact be rich and productive and fertile areas for study. It has even been suggested that beaches and their adjacent surf zones may constitute viable marine ecosystems.
