This book contains a selection of the proceedings of the Second Meeting of the European Association for Behaviour Therapy and Modification, and of the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Behavioural Engineering Association. The conference, held at Wexford, Ireland, was attended by 320 delegates from most European countries and North America. In the foreword to the proceedings of the previous European Conference Brengelmann and Tunner commented upon the extension of the basis of behaviour therapy. They pointed out that behaviour therapy had developed from the position in the early days, when treatments were derived by almost literal translation of learning principles to the clinic, to the more modern position where therapies were developed from considerations of the results from all experimental disciplines devoted to the study of both human and animal behaviour. Even a superficial consideration of the breadth of the topics repre sented in this volume will indicate that this trend has continued.

Patterns of Emotions: A New Analysis of Anxiety and Depression provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of anxiety and depression phenomena experienced in some degree by everyone and in crippling intensity by many. This book is a sequel to The Face of Emotion (Izard, 1971), which presented a general conceptual framework for the study of the personality, a theory of the emotions, and evidence for the universality of the fundamental emotions of interest, joy, surprise, distress, anger, disgust, contempt, shame, and fear. The book defines the problems of anxiety and depression, in the framework of differential emotion theory, as combinations or patterns of interacting fundamental emotions and bodily feelings. The differential emotion theory of anxiety and depression is compared with psychoanalytic theory, cognitive theory, and biogenetic theory. A number of studies are presented which support the differential emotion analysis of anxiety and depression. The book also presents studies of various life situations in which a particular fundamental emotion is dominant. What has been found repeatedly is that, in each such situation, the dominant emotion occurs in a pattern of dynamically related fundamental emotions. The patterns for a variety of commonly experienced and universal emotion situations are presented and discussed.

Research on groups has been a major focus of concern among psychologists and sociologists for many years. The study of groups certainly deserves a central role in these disciplines since much of our behavior occurs in groups and many important social phenomena involve groups. Issues such as leadership, conformity, group decision-making, group task performance, and coalition formation have had a long history of research. However, recently a number of other areas of research have blossomed that provide interesting new perspectives on group processes (e.g., social impact). In addition, topics of research have developed outside the commonly ac cepted domain of group dynamics (e.g., self-disclosure) which seem to be concerned with rather basic group processes. In January 1980 a 'Refresher Course in Clinical Psychology' was held in Liverpool. Volume I of Theory and Research in Behavioral Pediatrics focused on issues of early human development, with special emphasis given to assessment of the preterm infant and to factors inftuencing the organization of the caregiver infant relationship. Chapters in Volume 2 cover a broader range of topics and encompass a wider age span. Chapter I provides a historical review of the relationship between developmental psychology and pediatrics. The authors, Barbara R. Tinsley and Ross D. Parke, discuss differences between behavioral pediatrics and pediatric psychology and note that interdiscipli nary collaboration in research and application has increased steadily in re cent years. However, if similar collaborative efforts are to occur in education and training of pediatricians and developmental psychologists, it will be necessary to determine just what each discipline hopes to gain from such collaborative efforts. Tinsley and Parke report the results of anational survey designed to determine the areas of developmental psychology that pediatricians perceive to be of potential benefit to them in their delivery of pediatric care. Results of the survey suggest that there are many ways in which developmental psychology could be in corpora ted into the pediatric curriculum.
