Book Description
An informative selection of papers presented at the Medical Workshop on Pesticide-Related Illnesses It is vital to understand the public health impact of pesticides used in modern day agriculture. Unfortunately, scientifically valid information is often scattered and hard to find. Proceedings from the Medical Workshop on Pesticide-Related Illness is the essential text that fills these two voids. The papers collected here make up a volume that is a timely review of key issues in both the acute and chronic health effects of pesticide exposure. Proceedings from the Medical Workshop on Pesticide-Related Illness offers work originally presented at the groundbreaking 2002 International Conference on Pesticide Exposure and Health in Washington, DC. However, in order to reflect recent developments in the field, all of the authors have revised, updated, and expanded their presentations to address the current status of knowledge in pesticide health effects upon the major body organ systems. This up-to-date reference not only provides a wealth of relevant information on pesticide intoxication, it also offers viable solutions to the challenges of understanding the effects exposure has on health. Papers featured in Proceedings from the Medical Workshop on Pesticide-Related Illness examine: potential mechanisms, examples for each, and an algorithm for etiologic diagnoses of contact dermatitis in agriculture the specific acute and chronic neurological effects of pesticides on both central and peripheral nervous systems in-depth examples of male and female reproductive disorders associated with pesticide exposure and timeframes of diagnosis from weeks to months to years anatomical site-based outlines for the role of pesticide exposures in the etiology of human cancer and evaluations of recent developments in exposure assessment and molecular epidemiology in adults and children goals, components, and

Book Description
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has, for many years, been involved in research on pesticide poisoning to analyse the reasons for the high number of pesticide poisoning cases in Sri Lanka and discuss ways of controlling the problem through changes in agricultural practices and community involvement. More recently, research has focused on risk factors for deliberate and occupational pesticide poisoning and on the impact that a shift towards Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will have on the health of farming families. A workshop on Pesticides: Health Impacts and Alternative was held at the Colombo Hilton Hotel on 24 January 2002. The workshop marked the end of IWMI’s research on pesticide poisoning in Sri Lanka and provided researchers and policy makers from various. A disciplines such as health, environment, and agriculture an opportunity to share and discuss recent findings and to discuss strategies to reduce pesticide poisoning. This paper presents the workshop proceedings and includes a resource handbook for Sri Lanka on health impacts of pesticides and alternatives by listing names of relevant institutes, addresses and annotated references.

Book Description
Pesticides are developed specifically for their ability to interact & interfere with a variety of biological targets. Because of the fundamental similarities of organisms at the subcellular level, selectivity is often difficult to achieve & unanticipated pesticide actions leading to a number of adverse health effects may result. Some occupational exposure to pesticides is unavoidable, even with strict adherence to good agricultural practices & proper application procedures. This book, presenting the results of a 1988 workshop focusing on the potential chronic health effects of pesticides, addresses the topics of pesticide exposure, neurotoxicity, carcinogenicity, immunotoxicity, developmental toxicity, & reproductive toxicity. Pesticides discussed include: organochlorine insecticides, DDT & its derivatives, hexachlorocyclohexanes & cyclodienes, chlordecone, anticholinesterase insecticides, organophosphorus esters, carbamates, pyrethrins & pyrethroid insecticides, & herbicides, fungicides, & fumigants. A valuable source of information for biological chemists, toxicologists, pathologists, pharmacists, regulatory officials, environmentalists, governmental & state scientists, attorneys, managers, & biomedical scientists.
