Excerpt from The Pennsylvania-German Society Proceedings and Addresses at Germantown, Oct. 25, 1904, Vol. 15 Whilst you are in our midst we wish you should feel at'home. I do not doubt in your rides about the town you will have pointed out to you a number of places of interest. Many Of them it is the object of our society to mark with tablets, so that when we have passed away the next generation may know what we do, and with us honor such men as Pastorius, Sauer and Rittenhouse, and in turn strive to followafter them. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pennsylvania-German Society, Proceedings and Addresses at Allentown, Oct. 14, 1898, Vol. 9 In February, 1867, a meeting was held in the Allen House of special importance to pennsylvania-germans, who are charged by some men with having no interest in higher education. It was the meeting of stockholders which led to the organization of Muhlenberg College, which is the pride of Allentown and has benefited young men of many localities and been a great blessing to many pennsylvania-germans. Truly, we have reason as members of the Pennsylvania German Society to rejoice on meeting on such historic ground. We have come to Allentown not only to receive, but also to give, and I have no doubt that what our worthy President, the Superintendent of the Public Schools of our great Commonwealth, a genuine pennsylvania-german, will say to us this morning, and what the Rev. Dr. Rich ards, a descendant of the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America, will present to us this afternoon will strengthen the interest of the present members and awaken a desire on the part of many, who have not yet become members of the Society, to seek its good fellowship. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pennsylvania-German Society, Vol. 23: Proceedings and Addresses at Riegelsville, Pa;, October 4, 1912 Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all genera tions. In Thee our fathers trusted and they never were confounded. Thou didst lead them forth to places they knew not of and wert with them when they built their homes and when they laid the foundations of a govern ment, in which liberty and truth, peace and the free wor ship of Thy name were corner stones. We thank Thee for the heritage to which we are called. May we fulfill the obligations resting upon us. Give us devout and dili gent minds, tender and courageous hearts, steadfast and enlarging faith in Thee and in ourselves and in our fellow men. Give us the Christ-like spirit that it may be our joy to labor patiently, minister unto others generously, and serve daily our country and Thy kingdom. By Thy grace may we so develop, preserve and use our inheritance and talents that we may pass them on to our children with increased value. To-day may the genial cheer, the fra ternal spirit and the grateful word abound. Help us to be sincere in our affections, serious in our work and happy in our fellowship. In all things may Thy name be glori fied, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pennsylvania-German Society, Vol. 7: Proceedings and Addresses at Philadelphia, October 25, 1896 We praise Thee, O Lord, the everlasting Father, and Thy Son, our adorable Redeemer! Thou art God of heaven and earth in all generations. Thou hast formed the world and given to it life, and breath, and all things. Thou hast made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on the face of the earth. Thou hast determined the times before appointed. Thou hast marked the channels and directed the courses of the ancient and ever - broadening stream of history. Thou hast beheld, from age to age the westward surging, crest after crest, of the innumerable waves of the races and nations and tribes of the children of men - Phrygian and Pelasgian, Hun and Vandal, Goth and Visigoth, Mogul and Tartar, Dane and Saxon, Viking and Norman, Portuguese and Spaniard, Dutchman and Frenchman, Swiss and scots-irish, Puritan, Quaker and German. Thou art the God of our Fathers! With their strength and heart and soul they did worship Thee. From the ash of steel and the tempest of ame, from the exactions of royalty and the edict of exile, from the persecution of government and the grinding of poverty, they came over the great deep, O Lord, with Thy Word written in their hearts, and songs to Thee rising on their lips. Imploring Thy blessing did they press to these free and untrodden forests of Penn, and unto Thee did they lift their supplication in every hour of peril. They were Thine, O Father, as we are Thine.
