The difference of 14 million acres (4 percent) was attributed to differences in definitions (birch and others It was felt that the proportions from the 1978 study could be applied to the timberland base for resource planning purposes. The nri reported an estimated million acres of private forest in the Northern United States; the Forest Service estimate was million acres. Indian lands which have been added to the current estimate of private forest, totaled acres in the northern portion of the Nation in 1978.
