I desire to make a general confession of obligation to the numerous teachers who have aided me in my work, but the fol lowing merit special mention: Professor ]oynes, of the Uni versity of South Carolina, has been my trusty counsellor from the very beginning of this work; Professors Fay of Tufts College, Fontaine of Washington, D.C., Fortier of Tulane University, Louisiana, Garner of Annapolis, Newton of Ohio, and Van Baell of Boston, have also rendered valuable assistance. The selections are taken from fiction, history, poetry, and the drama. And Marie An toinette, may serve to interest the pupil in a fascinating period of French history, and will introduce him to that great mass of personal historical material in which French literature abounds. The dramatical selection, somewhat abridged from the original, will give him an early acquaintance with conversational French, and in troduce him in a charming way to that realm of litera ture in which the French are the undisputed masters. The vocabulary contains, besides the selected meanings of the words as used in the text, the translation of com mon idiomatic expressions found in the book. The notes supplement the vocabulary, and are also designed to help the pupil over the difficult places, to explain his torical and literary allusions and to call attention to. Book Description
Excerpt from A French Reader The following compilation is intended to serve as a com panion to our French Grammar during the three years' course generally prescribed in our colleges for the study of French. Although the earlier selections are simple and easy, and are followed by others of gradoelly increasing difficulty, yet there is no strict process of gradation or classification carried on through the entire book. N either have the selections been chosen merely with the view of collecting models for class exercises, although they contain abundant material for these. The aim of the compiler has been to furnish such a collection as would afi'ord the teacher an opportunity to select passages for reading and translation, for parsing and analysis, and models for com position, according to the difl'erent needs or capacities of different pupils or classes; and, at the same time, to supply the pupil with a course of reading, at once attrae tive and instructive, and covering the whole field of French literature.
