Book Description
Excerpt from Preparation of Pure Iron and Iron-Carbon Alloys Such reaction would cause not only possible contamination of the melt, but also irregularities in the working of the furnace. For this reason ordinary fire clay or silica bricks, or any others containing silica in considerable amount, are excluded. In our own kryptol furnace commercial magnesite bricks were used, and while they'were not all that could be desired they proved service able, provided the resistor was renewed occasionally. Preparation and Properties of Pure Iron Alloys
Author: W. L. Cheney
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781333936945
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 38
Book Description
Excerpt from Preparation and Properties of Pure Iron Alloys: II. Magnetic Properties of Iron-Carbon Alloys as Affected by Heat Treatment and Carbon Content In a recent paper 1 the magnetic properties of a quenched and subsequently tempered eutectoid carbon steel were discussed. Particular use was made of the reluctivity relationship and its metallurgical significance. It was suggested that this method of analysis might also be applicable to the whole iron-carbon series. Since, through the metallurgical division of the Bureau of Standards, there were available iron-carbon alloys of unusual purity, it seemed desirable to extend the investigations on the eutectoid-carbon steel to alloys having higher and lower percent ages of carbon. This seemed especially desirable, since in nearly all previous investigations with varying amounts of carbon (some of which are discussed below) the test specimens contained appreciable amounts of impurities, particularly manganese. This paper gives, therefore, the results of such an investigation. While it is realized that care must be exercised in drawing general conclusions from results obtained with a limited number of specrmens, it is felt that the unusual purity of the Specimens used in the present investigation warrants the publication of the data and such conclusions as may be drawn directly from the evidence at hand. Further experiments are necessary in order to make generalizations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Metallography and Microstructure in Ancient and Historic Metals
Author: David A. Scott
Publisher: Getty Publications
ISBN: 0892361956
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 185
Book Description
David A. Scott provides a detailed introduction to the structure and morphology of ancient and historic metallic materials. Much of the scientific research on this important topic has been inaccessible, scattered throughout the international literature, or unpublished; this volume, although not exhaustive in its coverage, fills an important need by assembling much of this information in a single source. Jointly published by the GCI and the J. Paul Getty Museum, the book deals with many practical matters relating to the mounting, preparation, etching, polishing, and microscopy of metallic samples and includes an account of the way in which phase diagrams can be used to assist in structural interpretation. The text is supplemented by an extensive number of microstructural studies carried out in the laboratory on ancient and historic metals. The student beginning the study of metallic materials and the conservation scientist who wishes to carry out structural studies of metallic objects of art will find this publication quite useful.

Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium
Author: A.K. Suri
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351448978
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 271
Book Description
The growth and development witnessed today in modern science, engineering, and technology owes a heavy debt to the rare, refractory, and reactive metals group, of which niobium is a member. Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium presents a vivid account of the metal through its comprehensive discussions of properties and applications, resources and resource processing, chemical processing and compound preparation, metal extraction, and refining and consolidation. Typical flow sheets adopted in some leading niobium-producing countries for the beneficiation of various niobium sources are presented, and various chemical processes for producing pure forms of niobium intermediates such as chloride, fluoride, and oxide are discussed. The book also explains how to liberate the metal from its intermediates and describes the physico-chemical principles involved. It is an excellent reference for chemical metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, extraction and process metallurgists, and minerals processors. It is also valuable to a wide variety of scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in the topic.

Alloys
Author: Fathi Habashi
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3527611924
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
In industry very few metals are used in their pure form; the majority are employed as a combination of a metal with other metals, nonmetals or metalloids. In this way some specific properties are improved, making the alloy more attractive than the pure metal. The present work comprises essential information on alloys in one compact volume. Classification, properties, preparation, applications, and economic aspects are discussed for alloy steels, primary-metal alloys, light-metal alloys, and some other alloy systems. The work is based on more than 30 articles from Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry and represents the effort of over 60 specialists. It supplies hundreds of top-quality illustrations, diagrams, and charts and provides hand-picked references for further study. An introductory overview of the subject is provided by the editor. The book is a handy yet authoritative reference work for the practicing metallurgist, but also for physical metallurgists, engineers and scientists in industry.
