Book Description
The Service Life Prediction Technology Program is part of the Integrated High Payoff Rocket Propulsion Technology (IHPRPT) program under the area of Strategic Sustainment. The overall goal of IHPRPT is to double the state-of-the-art national rocket propulsion capability by the year 2010. The primary objectives of the Service Life Prediction Technology program are to reduce the uncertainty in predicted stresses and strains, to reduce material failure characterization uncertainties, and to reduce aging model uncertainties. Emphasis of the program will be to: (1) investigate and implement nonlinear constitutive laws (including laboratory characterization methods); (2) to characterize and model chemical migration and reactions in aging propellants and bondlines; and (3) to investigate and establish nondestructive methods which can be used to characterize the in-situ propellant properties and property variations in solid propellant rocket motors.

Book Description
This book deals with structural failure (induced by mechanical, aerodynamic, acoustic and aero-thermal, loads, etc.) of modern aerospace vehicles, in particular high-speed aircraft, solid propellant rocket systems and hypersonic flight vehicles, where structural integrity, failure prediction and service life assessment are particularly challenging, due to the increasingly more demanding mission requirements and the use of non-traditional materials, such as non-metallic composites, in their construction. Prediction of the complex loading environment seen in high-speed operation and constitutive / fracture models which can adequately describe the non-linear behaviour exhibited by advanced alloys and composite materials are critical in analyzing the non-linear structural response of modern aerospace vehicles and structures. The state-of-the-art of the different structural integrity assessment and prediction methodologies (including non-destructive structural health monitoring techniques) used for the structural design, service life assessment and failure analysis of the different types of aerospace vehicles are presented. The chapters are written by experts from aerospace / defence research organizations and academia in the fields of solid mechanics, and structural mechanics and dynamics of aircraft, rocket and hypersonic systems. The book will serve as a useful reference document containing specialist knowledge on appropriate prediction methodologies for a given circumstance and experimental data acquired from multi-national collaborative programs.

Book Description
The Propulsion and Energetics Panel Symposium on Service Life of Solid Propellant Motors was held from 10-14 May 1996, in Athens, Greece. It dealt with the methods of extending and predicting service life of solid propellant systems for rockets, gas generators and guns. It also dealt with shelf life under varying conditions. This defence-specific symposium was aimed at improving system reliability, safety and cost. There were five sessions (43 papers) and a keynote address: (1) Chemical and Physical Aging Mechanisms (9); (2) Non-Destructive Test Methods (6); (3) Gun Propellants (7); (4) Methodologies and Techniques for Determining Service Life (11); and (5) Application of the Service Life Methodology and Techniques to Rocket Motor Systems (10).

Book Description
This article introduces two predictive algorithms for the performance of solid propellant rocket motor. The emphasis is on the introduction of Time-Space Algorithm. The authors proposed a general two-dimensional grain calculation procedure in order to conduct the grain calculations. Therefore, the predictive algorithms for performance introduced by this article show generality. A comprehensive computer program for the aforementioned method has been written and applied to calculating the performance of three different solid rocket motors. The calculated results are consistent with those derived from experimental data.

Book Description
Temperature changes that solid rocket motors experience while residing in various locations with different climates cause thermal stresses in the propellant. Repeated application of such stresses can cause damage to the rocket propellant, which may result in cracks. This report describes a probabilistic environmental model for solid rocket motors. Movement of rockets from one station to an other is simulated, using a Markov chain technique. A cumulative damage model is used to compile the damage resulting in each rocket location. The rocket external temperature is assumed to be a random variable and expressed in a probabilistic form for each Markov state. As an example, data were collected to represent the environmental model for Sidewinder rockets. The Markov matrix for Sidewinders was based on past motor logistics. Propellant failure is predicted when the cumulative damage exceeds a critical value. (Author).

Book Description
The main issues in service life prediction of solid rocket motors are the lack of a fundamental understanding of crack growth behavior under service loading conditions and a reliable methodology to predict crack growth. It is relatively unknown in the areas of microstructure effects on damage initiation and evolution, large deformation effect on crack growth, and the effects of mismatch of material properties of a bond system on the stress fields near the interfacial crack tip. This program consists of five major tasks: Task I predicting the initial crack length in high stress regions; Task II - crack instability and growth models; Task III - numerical modeling of crack growth; and Task IV - interfacial fracture of bimaterial bond systems. The program's basic approach involves a blend of analytical and experimental studies. In general, mechanisms and mechanics involved in cohesive fracture in a solid propellant and adhesive fracture in bond systems are emphasized. Program results will provide a basis for developing advanced crack growth and service life prediction technologies for predicting the service life of solid rocket motors. The implementation of these advanced technologies will not only increase the reliability of the solid rocket motors but also significantly reduce the motor replacement costs.

Book Description
This book, a translation of the French title Technologie des Propergols Solides, offers otherwise unavailable information on the subject of solid propellants and their use in rocket propulsion. The fundamentals of rocket propulsion are developed in chapter one and detailed descriptions of concepts are covered in the following chapters. Specific design methods and the theoretical physics underlying them are presented, and finally the industrial production of the propellant itself is explained. The material used in the book has been collected from different countries, as the development of this field has occurred separately due to the classified nature of the subject. Thus the reader not only has an overall picture of solid rocket propulsion technology but a comprehensive view of its different developmental permutations worldwide.
