Book Description
As a phenomenologist Lacoste is concerned with investigating the human aptitude for experience; as a theologian Lacoste is interested in humanity’s potential for a relationship with the divine, what he terms the ’liturgical relationship’. Beginning from the proposition that prayer is a theme that occurs throughout Lacoste’s writing, and using this proposition as a heuristic through which to view, interpret and critique his thought, this book examines Lacoste’s place amid both the recent ’theological turn’ in French thought and the post-war emergence of la nouvelle théologie. Drawing upon unpublished and out of print material previously only available in French, Romanian or German, the book will be of interest to scholars of philosophy, phenomenology and theology.

Book Description
Jeanne-Marie (nee) Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon (commonly known as Madame Guyon) (1648-1717) was a French mystic and one of the key advocates of Quietism. Quietism was considered heretical by the Roman Catholic Church, and she was imprisoned from 1695 to 1703 after publishing a book on the topic, A Short and Easy Method of Prayer. Guyon's parents were very religious people, and they gave her an especially pious training. Other important impressions from her youth that remained with her came from reading the works of St. Francis de Sales, and from certain nuns, her teachers. At one time she wanted to be a nun, but soon changed her mind. Her published works, the Moyen Court and the Regles des Associees a l'Enfance de Jesu, were both placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1688. Francois Fenelon's Maximes des Saints was also branded with the condemnation of both the Pope and the bishops of France. Her disciples at the Court of Louis XIV were persons of piety and of exemplary life. Guyon's most devout disciples after her death were to be found among the Protestants and especially the Quakers.

Book Description
A Short and Easy Method of Prayer was originally circulated privately but proved to be so popular that it was finally made available to the public in 1685. Written by French mystic, writer, and preacher MADAME JEANNE-MARIE BOUVIER DE LA MOTTE-GUYON (1648-1717), this brief treatise is divided into 24 chapters, each chapter a step along the path to God. These clear and simple precepts-translated from the French by Thomas D. Brook and published in English in this edition in 1867-were written with the average person in mind, and include Madame Guyon's thoughts on meditation, self-abandonment, suffering, self-examination, distractions and temptations, prayer as a sacrifice, the distinction between inward and outward acts, and more. Madame Guyon's words of encouragement will inspire the modern reader much as they inspired her 17th-century counterpart.
