Book Description
Excerpt from Practical X Ray Work In trying to give a description of X ray work of use to medical men I encounter two principal difficulties. The first is that some, but not all, are well acquainted with the element of electrical science, and the second is that the use of a Crookes' tube cannot be learned by reading a book. As the majority of English medical practitioners hold the joint qualification of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, I have taken as my starting-point the syllabus of the first examination of the Conjoint Board. Those gentlemen who are skilled electricians, and who may read this book, will therefore pardon my including explanations of electrical terms. At the same time, the explanations given will be of little use to any who have not mastered the elements of the science to the extent required for the examination just mentioned. As to the second difficulty, I have done my best to set forth, in the chapter on "Tubes," some account of the vagaries of these pieces of apparatus. If the reader should wish to learn more about them he must do so practically. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Practical X-Ray Work WE offer no apology for publishing this small work on a. Subject which, though of recent introduction, threatens already to be somewhat overwritten. From graduates attending post-graduate courses (chiefly Army and Navy surgeons) we learn that they have difficulty in finding a book to give them a practical understanding of radiology, with just enough detail to enable them to operate an ordinary installation. To meet such want we have designed this work, and we trust that to medical students and practitioners it may serve as a sufficient introduction to the subject, and as a practical guide in working. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Radiography: A Hand-Book of the Applications of the X-Rays As is well known, any ordinary source of electricity, whether a battery, dynamo, friction machine, or what not, has two poles or terminals, relatively described as positive and negative. If these are connected by means of a wire we form what is known as a circuit; and when the battery (etc.) is in action a current of electricity passes along the wire. Book Description
Excerpt from The American X-Ray Journal, Vol. 11: Devoted to Practical X-Ray Work and Allied Arts and Sciences; July 1902 I was honestly astonished at the sight that the tube revealed. Watches packed so closely together, that it was hardly possible to see the light between them. And all in this innocent looking I let Jack take a look, and he whistled in astonishment. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Radiography: A Handbook for Physicians, Surgeons, and Other Users of X-Rays The first edition of this book, - the earliest handbook of radiography in any language, - was issued in May of 1896, when the subject was less than six months old. In 1898 the subject had so far grown in importance that a second edition, entirely re-written, seemed necessary. In this winter, 1901-2, when radiography is recognized as a most valuable aid to the physician and surgeon, when its methods have become relatively permanent, and its apparatus and materials are fairly perfect, a third edition, much larger and more important than the others, seems necessary. In introducing it the authors wish to acknowledge most gratefully the assistance which has been so cheerfully given to them by radiographers in many parts of the world, but especially by the members of The Rontgen Society and its secretary. They have also to acknowledge the kindness of many firms and friends in placing electros of their apparatus at their disposal. Among others may be mentioned Baird & Tatlock; A. F. Cossor; Harry Cox, Limited; A. E. Deane of London; T. Ernecke, Berlin; A. W. Hirschmann, Berlin; Max Kohl, Chemnitz; Newton & Co.; Rebman & Co.; The India Rubber Works Co.; and James Wimshurst. Book Description
Excerpt from The Practical Applications of Xrays This book is based largely on a course of Cantor Lectures delivered before the Royal Society of Arts in 1921. The manuscripts of other lectures given at the Royal Institution and the Royal Society of Medicine have also been drawn upon. The book is concerned primarily with the practical applications of the X-rays, and although other aspects have not been neglected, notably that of measurement, the reader is referred to the author's "X-Rays" (Longmans) for a more extended theoretical treatment of the fundamentals of the subject. W. H. and W. L. Bragg's masterly work on "X-Rays and Crystal Structure" (Bell) is unapproached in its account of X-ray spectroscopy. The writer wishes to thank his wife for her ever-effective assistance. He is also indebted to various friends who have kindly permitted the reproduction of radiographs. Book Description
Excerpt from X-Rays Simply Explained: A Handbook on the Theory and Practice of Radiography IN writing this handbook I have endeavoured to give a clear and concise account of the sequence of experiments, discoveries, and improvements which have led up to the present knowledge of Rentgen rays and their application to pathology. While it is intended Specially for students and amateurs, and gives no account of the more complicated and expensive apparatus, nor of the latest developments in hospital methods, I hope it will be in some degree useful to the practical man, and that he will find full explanations of all that is properly within the scope of a small and elementary book. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of X-Ray Technic This short manual on the technic of X-ray examination has been prepared with a view to the needs of the medical service of the United States Army. The small number of medical officers in the service necessitates frequent change of station, so that it often becomes necessary for one to familiarize him self in a comparatively short time with the essentials of radiologic technic. With this in mind it has been the author's aim to limit this work to the absolute essentials, a knowledge of which will enable the Operator to do satisfactory work in X-ray diagnosis.
