Book Description
When eight English noblemen known as the Lords Proprietors were granted the Charles Towne territory by King Charles II as a reward for their loyalty, the grant came with an express command to develop the area into a profit-making venture. Fortunately, the area came with a natural deep-water port, perfect for establishing trade. Soon trade in lumber, deerskins, and indigo established Charles Towne's wealth and prosperity, and the invention of the cotton gin and improvements in the rice crop cultivation helped boost the area's economy. By 1750, Charleston was the fourth largest city in colonial America--and the wealthiest, thanks in part to additional trade through Georgetown and Port Royal.

Book Description
The Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics has released an overview of the movement of maritime freight handled by the nation's container ports in 2009 through mid-2010. The report summarizes trends in maritime freight movement since 1995, especially during the last five years. It also covers the impact of the recent U.S. and global economic downturn on container traffic; regional shifts in cargo handled, vessel calls, and port capacity; the rankings of U.S. ports among the world's top ports; and the number of maritime container entries into the United States compared to --truck and rail containers. The report also includes summaries of landside access to container ports and maritime security initiatives.

Book Description
This book takes a long-run view of the global maritime trade of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia from 1700 to American Independence in 1776. Land argues that the three cities developed large, global networks of maritime commerce and exchange that created tension between merchants and the British Empire which sought to enforce mercantilist policies to constrain American trade to within the British Empire. Colonial merchants created and then expanded their mercantile networks well beyond the confines of the British Empire. This trans-imperial trade (often considered smuggling by British authorities) formed the roots of what became known as the American Revolution.
