Book Description
This report presents a cost analysis of Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) production from methanol The process examined is a typical oxidative carbonylation process. This process is a non-phosgene alternative for DMC production, in which CO, O2 and methanol react in the presence of copper chloride (CuCI) catalyst. Although reaction occurs in the liquid phase, a heterogeneous-phase mixture forms and the product stream is withdrawn from the reactor in vapor phase. The vapor is partially condensed, treated for recovery of catalyst and then subjected to distillation operations. Unreacted methanol is recovered and recycled to the reactor. Purified Dimethyl Carbonate is obtained after separation of side-product water. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) US Patent 20030236428, issued to General Electric Company (2) US Patent 5685957, issued to Enichem Synthesis in 1997 Keywords: Non-Phosgene Process, Phosgene-Free, Oxidative Carbonylation, Enichem, Eni

Book Description
This report presents a cost analysis of Polymer Grade (PG) Propylene production from ethylene and raffinate-2 using a metathesis process. The process examined is similar to CB&I Lummus Technology's Olefins Conversion Technology (OCT). In this process, Polymer Grade Propylene is produced through a metathesis reaction of ethylene with 2-butene, present in raffinate-2 feedstock. This report examines one-time costs associated with the construction of a plant and the continuing costs associated with the daily operation of such a plant. More specifically, it discusses: * Capital Investment, broken down by: - Total fixed capital required, divided in process unit (ISBL); infrastructure (OSBL), contingency and owner's cost - Total fixed capital required, divided in process unit (ISBL); infrastructure (OSBL), contingency and owner's cost - Working capital and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up * Operating cost, broken down by: - Variable operating costs (raw materials, utilities) - Fixed operating costs (maintenance, operating charges, plant overhead, local taxes and insurance) - Depreciation This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) US Patent 8440874, issued to Lummus Technology and BASF in 2013 (2) US Patent 20050124839, issued to Lummus Technology in 2005 Keywords: PG Propylene, Olefins Disproportionation, Lummus OCT, Olefins Metathesis, Phillips Triolefin, Propene, Ethene, Butylene, On-Purpose Propylene Production

Book Description
This report presents a cost analysis of Polycarbonate (PC) production from bisphenol A (BPA) and phosgene. The process examined is a typical interfacial process. In this process, BPA, dissolved in an aqueous solution, is reacted with phosgene, in an organic solution, at the interface of the two-phase mixture. The carbonate oligomers produced are then polycondensed to Polycarbonate resin. Book Description
This report presents a cost analysis of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) production from ethylene glycol and purified terephthalic acid (PTA). The process examined is a typical melt-phase polymerization followed by solid-state polymerization. In this process, initially an oligomer intermediate is produced by the esterification of PTA with ethylene glycol. The oligomer then undergoes a melt-polymerization and a solid-state polymerization, leading to a bottle grade PET.
