Book Description
Excerpt from Poems of Heart and Home In 1889 he was elected Auditor of Miami county, Ohio, and was re - elected in 1892, and continued until January 1, 1896, when he resigned to ac cept the chief clerkship in the Auditor of State's office under the administration of W. H. Guil bert. He sought health and pleasure in many lands and, inspired by the scenes he saw, gave vent to his enthusiasm in verse. As has been said before, he did not aspire to anything noted in poetry. He had no ambition to soar to the altitude attained by the great poets of our later day. He was content to sing for those nearest and dearest to him, and their appreciation of his efforts was reward enough for him. Book Description
Excerpt from Poems of the Heart and Home Emillia, then of Xenette, or, nally, under her true name either as Miss Vining or Mrs. Yuleand also, much that they have never before seen. Some of these poems have been widely circulated, not only in Canada, but in the United States and Great Britain; and some appear for the first time in the pages of this book. They are offered solely upon their merits; and upon those alone they must stand or fall. Whatever there is in them calculated to stir the heart of our common Humanity, to voice forth its joys or its sorrows, to truly interpret its emotions, or to give utterance to its aspirations and its hopes, will live; that which does not thus speak for Humanity, has no right to live; and the sooner it nds a merited oblivion the better for its author and the world. These poems are essentially Canadian. They have nearly all been written on Canadian soil;-their themes and inc-identsthose that are not purely imaginary or suggested by current events in other countriesare almost wholly Canadian; and they are mainly the outgrowth of many and varied experiences in Canadian life. Book Description
Excerpt from Lays of Hearth and Home In publishing this little volume. I feel it necessary to claim the kind indulgence of the Reader for these unpretending poems which have so essentially been written for my own home - circle. I am well aware that they can, critically Speaking, boast of no poetic merit, and only be of value to those kindred spirits that may have thrilled to the same emotions, and may find in these verses an echo of their own feelings and impressions. If a glance into my little book can brighten an hour of weariness, or soothe a moment of suffering; if but one fainting heart can find in its pages a word of comfort or encouragement, then indeed will my aim be attained. And God's blessing rest on these simple strains! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
For this companion to her New York Times best-selling collection A Family of Poems, Caroline Kennedy has hand-selected more than a hundred of her favorite poems that lend themselves to memorization. Some are joyful. Some are sad. Some are funny and lighthearted. Many offer layers of meaning that reveal themselves only after the poem has been studied so closely as to be learned by heart. In issuing the challenge to memorize great poetry, Caroline Kennedy invites us to a deeply enriching experience. For as she reminds us, “If we learn poems by heart, not only do we have their wisdom to draw on, we also gain confidence, knowledge and understanding that no one can take away.” Illustrated with gorgeous, original watercolor paintings by award-winning artist Jon J Muth , this is truly a book for all ages, and one that families will share again and again. Caroline’s thoughtful introductions shed light on the many ways we can appreciate poetry, and the special tradition of memorizing and reciting poetry that she celebrates within her own family.
