Book Description
Poetry. Fiction. In days before selfies and social media, postcards were a ubiquitous feature of travel, providing both means of communication with friends and family while away, and souvenirs of journeys once back home. Even if not quite gone, they seem more than a little nostalgic now, as do many of the poems in Jeanne Griggs' new collection, POSTCARD POEMS. By choosing to present her poems as short notes that could fit on a postcard, she has opted for a formal brevity; and the conceit of holiday communication allows her to write both about place (so that her poems are often both ekphrastic and epistolary--a neat trick) and about the people in her life. Travel, of course, is always a journey through both exterior and interior spaces, physical and mental, and we witness both in these often wistful poems. A visit on Cape Cod with friends, women of a certain age, affords an opportunity to live like in the books, / without any of the fuss / of having to sustain anything / except ourselves. Children grow up over the span of these travels, despite her wishing she had caged them, holding onto the past. A third visit to Niagara Falls is the first without her son--the first time / you were too young to remember / and the second too old to want / to come along--who is now far off in Siberia on travels of his own. Iowa is a place equally exotic, known only from watching a baseball movie / ...until we left our daughter / there, and they drive long out of the way to visit the Field of Dreams site, And it was there, / just like we'd seen it, / in real life. Stopping South of the Border she buys picture postcards of this place on the way / to where we're actually going. That's a good description of the mosaic of life that is constructed out of these brief notes, a chronicle of stops along the way until, in the final poem, all future plans suspended... / we are / still saving up from our last trip.

Book Description
Poetry books are generally ignored, unless the poet is famous. By its very nature, poetry is tuned to emotions and feelings in a person. Very often, such feelings are transitionary, and after emotionally moving a reader, poems often leave them without a residual meaning in their mind. In this book, Short Poems, Long Tales, the poet conveys a message that is perhaps a bit more lasting. It modifies the understanding process and makes it more relevant to living in the 21st century, where we have a global culture. Now, it is important to leave narrow views behind and look ahead. Discriminating people, are very hurtful, but will be with us for the foreseeable future. We must learn how to live with them. Poems in this book help with that. A second parameter they address is gauging the actual passage of time. Most people are not mindful of this and live their lives without realizing how time passed away. The third aspect is universal human instincts that are common to people around the globe. The mood proposed by the author in this book is to learn to deal with each other in the concept of live-and-let-live. This is in the theme of Sufi poems. The entire learning from this book of poetry is to enable a more thoughtful and understanding person. At times, some poems are mildly witty in a refreshing way.

Book Description
Nelson Algren was a renowned Chicago writer known for his social commentary and his novels like The Man with the Golden Arm and A Walk on the Wild Side. Although he continues to be remembered almost exclusively for his novels, this book aims to highlight the value and influence of his short form works. Before he died in 1981, Algren had amassed a genre-defying body of work, including short stories, articles, poems and book reviews. The present book features a comprehensive analysis and discussion of Algren's lost literature, including everything but his novels. One of the pieces covered is a masterpiece of race relations written in 1950, more than 60 years before the galvanization of the Black Lives Matter movement. Another is a scathing poem about Algren's transatlantic love affair with Simone de Beauvoir. Both items are reprinted in the book courtesy of the Algren estate. This book also includes references to Algren's works that have yet to be studied by Algren scholars.
