Excerpt from Plato The following sketch makes no claim to be considered as a complete account of the philosophy of Plato. Many topics of importance have been omitted altogether, and others only treated with the utmost attainable brevity. I have also thought it necessary to avoid, as far as possible, all controversial discussion, and have therefore in many cases followed my own judgment on disputable points without attempting to support it by the detailed reasoning which would be indispensable in a work of larger scope. My object has been to sit as loose as possible to all the traditional expositions of Platonism, and to give in broad outline the personal impression of the philosopher's thought which I have derived from repeated study of the Platonic text. Excerpt from The Later PlatonistThe religious rites and beliefs were also set forth as pertaining to a common principle, and only at fault as having been adulterated with foreign and incongru ous elements. Excerpt from The Republic of Plato I have' felt some hesitation as to the right course to take in citing the MS where its reading is preferred and agrees with that of F. Professor Burnet's article in the Classical Review Vol. XVI p. 98 ff. Called forth an acknow ledgment from the editor (classical Review Vol. XVI p. 215 ff.) that F and 7/ were of the same family, and that, as F is the older member, it should be cited in preference to 7/ wherever the two agree. If this were done, however, it would have been necessary to re-write the last paragraph on p. Xii of the Introduction, and also note 3 on the same page. I have been unwilling to make so great an alteration in the editor's work, and have therefore cited both mss in all cases where F and 7) have a common reading, which is preferred to that of A. The slight additions to the Introduction involved by this change are indicated by square brackets on pp. Xii and xiii. The corrections of the text have necessitated the omission of some passages in the list on p. Xvii, where the reading of Al was originally adopted, but that of A2 was substituted in the large edition. Excerpt from Selections From Plato But before we can arrive at them a certain process of initiation is necessary. Let us consider for a moment what these ultimate realities, or, as Plato called them, ideas, are. They are that which veritably Is, as opposed to that which Seems. They are that which is eternal and immutable, as opposed to that which comes into being, grows, passes, and vanishes. They are that which is One as opposed to that which is Many. They are the object of true knowledge, for true knowledge can concern itself only with what is fixed and stable; phenomena are the object of opinion only, conveyed through sensuous perception. They are related to phenomena as substance to shadow. Nothing that our sense makes us aware of in the material world has any real existence, save in so far as it partakes of the nature of an Idea. The Idea is the only reality, and the use of sensible objects is to awaken the mind to perceive the Idea. Paradoxical as it may seem, this insistance upon the empty and unreal character of the sensible world is intended to give true worth and meaning to that world, and is indeed the only way in which this can be done. The sensible universe must die to live. Only by realising its absolute unreality, as an object, can we come to understand its true value as the symbol and image of an object.
