The Interaction of Strong Electromagnetic Fields with Plasmas
Author: Ivan Romanovich Gekker
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
The range of plasma conditions considered here is intentionally broad, systematic and relevant to such areas as plasma heating, plasma acceleration, laser-plasma interaction, and plasma confinement. This volume presents the principle concepts of plasma physics - with an account of the linear theory of electromagnetic wave interaction - and then covers nonlinear processes with extensive treatment of the pondermotive force. Related experimental work is thoroughly reviewed.

Pages : 568
Book Description
A final report on work covering four years of investigation is presented. Included in this report are the following: (a) An experimental investigation of the acceleration of plasma toroids in a pulsed traveling wave device. (b) A theoretical investigation of the behavior of plasma in axially symmetric magnetic fields. (c) A detailed description of a CW polyphase driven traveling wave accelerator. In addition there are a number of appendices describing various ancillary techniques and apparatuses including polyphase monitoring and control systems, an analog computer for axially symmetric magnetic fields, and the CW power sources.

Engineering Aspects of Electromagnetic Energy Addition to a Gas by a Traveling Magnetic Field
Author: Charles W. Haldeman
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electromagnetism
Languages : en
Pages : 89
Book Description
Research on a traveling wave plasma accelerator for ultimate use as a high altitude, high velocity flow simulation device is reported. The work reported covers: the design, construction and testing of acceleration coils for field levels up to 500,000 ampere turns per meter at 100 KHz; the predicted performance of increasing phase velocity accelerators using equilibrium air at these field levels, computed numerically from the one dimensional equations of motion including friction and heat transfer; analysis of a finite accelerator having a phase velocity which increases with length; a description of model accelerator coils with velocity ratio of 2.5; and methods of eliminating losses connected with the fringing field at the ends of an accelerator coil. Earlier calculations of the performance of an accelerator with a magnetic core are also extended, and experience with extension of the operating power level of the RF plasma source is briefly discussed. (Author).
