Book Description
This module is oriented toward information students in grades 9-12 about the impact of environmental hazards on human health, and to motivate them to take personal responsibility for their part in protecting the environment. Instructionally, the module utilizes a small group cooperative learning strategy, and is organized into nine lessons. Part 1 (lessons 1-4) introduces the unit and sets up long-term assignments and experiments that will be reported on at the end of the unit. It also contains two lessons, one about toxic chemicals, and one about recycling, that do not involve team presentations. Part 2 (lessons 5-7) focuses specifically on environmental issues of land, air, and water, how they affect human health and what it takes to be responsible environmental citizens. In these lessons student teams make presentations to the class on their areas of expertise. Part 3 (lessons 8-9) provides the opportunity to integrate what has been learned in earlier lessons. Students present the results of their long-term assignments and experiments, and class members consider what they can do to preserve the environment. Included in the appendices are a glossary of special terms used in the module and a list of organizations to contact for further information about environmental issues. Worksheets and handouts for students are included. (LLL)
