The 15th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at Fort Mitchell, Alabama, in August, 1861, with eleven companies. With over 900 men, the regiment was moved into East Tennessee and then Virginia. It joined the main army near Manassas and was brigaded with the 21st Georgia, 21st North Carolina, and 16th Mississippi Regiments under Maj. General G. B. Crittenden of Kentucky (Brig. General Isaac R. Trimble succeeded Crittenden in December). The 15th Alabama was placed in the Alabama Brigade under General Evander McIver Law (with the 4th, 44th, 47th and 48th Alabama regiments) on 19 January 1863. It fought throughout the war in Virginia except when it was transferred to the West with Braxton Bragg's army, fought at Chickamauga (19-20 September), where it lost 19 killed and 123 wounded, out of 425 engaged. In the fierce fights at Brown's Ferry (27 October) and Lookout Valley, the regiment lost 15 killed and 40 wounded. At Knoxville (17 November-4 December), 6 were killed and 21 wounded. The 15th surrendered 170 men at Appomattox. Of 1633 on the rolls, over 260 fell in battle, 440 died in the service, and 231 were transferred or discharged. The 25th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Mobile in December 1861 by the consolidation of McClellan's 1st and 6th Alabama Infantry. It remained in that vicinity 2-3 months, then went to Tennessee. Brigaded under General Adley Gladden, the regiment (numbering 305 effectives, because of illness) fought at Shiloh (casualties: 15 k, 75 w), then was placed under General Gardner, with the 19th, 22nd, 39th, and 26-50th Infantry Regiments. It fought throughout the war with the Army of Tennessee. In the Carolinas, the 25th was in Sherman's front, with some casualties at Columbia and Kinston, and with large loss at Bentonville. Consolidated with the 19th, 22nd, 39th, and 26-50th, the regiment was shortly after surrendered at Goldsboro, having about 75 men of the old 25th present for duty. The 57th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Troy, in Pike County, in March 1863, as part of the brigade of General James H. Clanton of Montgomery. It was stationed at Mobile and Pollard until January 1864, when it moved to Demopolis. Brigaded there under General Abraham Buford (who was soon succeeded by General Thomas M. Scott) with the 12th Louisiana, 27th, 35th, and 55th Alabama, and another Louisiana regiment, the 57th joined the Army of the Tennessee in time to share fully the hardships of the Dalton-Atlanta campaign. The casualties of the regiment, however, were not severe until the Battle of Peachtree Creek, when it was cut to pieces. Following the fall of Atlanta, Hood led his army to Tennessee in a vain attempt to cut off Sherman's supply lines. The 57th participated in the movement into Tennessee, and at Franklin and Nashville, its losses were again large. Transferred to North Carolina, the regiment fought at Bentonville with severe loss.
