Book Description
The joining of words and pictures in advertising art is nowhere more intimate than in mortised cuts. This printer's term refers to designs, usually pictorial, engraved on wood, or stereotyped in metal from wood blocks, with one or more hole sawn into the plates so type could be inserted. Less strictly, it applies to the images printed from such cuts. In some 19th-century specimen books, the word "pierced" is used as a synonym for "mortised." These cuts, perhaps more than any other genre of advertising art, conveys a period feeling so distinctive that they are among the most-sought-after graphic elements from 19th-century sources. For all their popularity, both then and now, these cuts are widely scattered through files of old periodicals and typefounders' and engravers' catalogues. The present collection represent an extensive search through rare printed materials too numerous to list here. The collection features 551 of the most interesting and versatile images, arranged in categories. Anyone who has tried to find a vaguely remembered cut in one of the old specimen books, in which cuts were usually arranged haphazardly, will appreciate this organization, especially considering the sheer number of designs contained in the book. It is probably the largest and most varied compendium exclusively devoted to this genre of wood-engraving available today.

Book Description
In the mid-19th century, typefounders plied their trade with an extraordinary exuberance, creating a new and dazzling range of typefaces and ornamentation that in sheer versatility, ornate beauty, and sumptuousness remain unsurpassed. Today, as never before, their work is sought by artists, designers, and craftspeople for its elegance, expressiveness, and ability to command attention. This unique volume contains the work of one of the most celebrated typefounders of that glorious era in type design: Charles Derriey, who, from his Parisian foundry, fed the Victorians' insatiable appetite for decoration and embellishment with a truly fabulous assortment of display types and printers' ornaments. The 113 plates reprinted here from his 1862 typographic catalog include over 2,500 royalty-free type forms and ornamental designs. Here is an incredibly rich source of intricately ornamented typefaces along with an eye-catching array of vignettes (dingbats, headpieces, tailpieces, etc.), rules, flourishes, corner elements, and much more, including a wide selection of Victorian frames and border material. Leaf through it and you will find it to be not only a fascinating presentation of type design, but also an extensive sampler of Victorian ornamentation — a valuable reference book and source of royalty-free graphics, sturdily yet inexpensively produced, that will offer you years of inspiration, enjoyment, and practical use.

Book Description
Weaving together family history, genetic discovery, and scenes from her life, Ami McKay tells the compelling, true-science story of her own family's unsettling legacy of hereditary cancer while exploring the challenges that come from carrying the mutation that not only killed many people you loved, but might also kill you. The story of Ami McKay's connection to a genetic disorder called Lynch syndrome begins over seventy years before she was born and long before scientists discovered DNA. In 1895 her great-great aunt, Pauline Gross, a seamstress in Ann Arbor, Michigan, confided to a pathology professor at the local university that she expected to die young, like so many others in her family. Rather than dismiss her fears, the pathologist chose to enlist Pauline in the careful tracking of those in her family tree who had died of cancer. Pauline's premonition proved true--she died at 46--but because of her efforts, her family (who the pathologist dubbed 'Family G') would become the longest and most detailed cancer genealogy ever studied in the world. A century after Pauline's confession, researchers would identify the genetic mutation responsible for the family's woes. Now known as Lynch syndrome, the genetic condition predisposes its carriers to several types of cancer, including colorectal, endometrial, ovarian and pancreatic. In 2001, as a young mother with two sons and a keen interest in survival, Ami McKay was among the first to be tested for Lynch syndrome. She had a feeling she'd test positive: her mother's side of the family was riddled with early deaths and her own mother was being treated for the disease. When the test proved her fears true, she began living in "an unsettling state between wellness and cancer," and she's been there ever since. Intimate, candid, and probing, her genetic memoir tells a fascinating story, teasing out the many ways to live with the hand you are dealt.
