There is uncertainty about the effects of whole body vibration (WBV) on strength, power, balance and functional mobility, particularly in young healthy individuals, while the mechanisms by which it may act are unclear. This thesis aimed to clarify the clinical and physiological effects of WBV on young and older individuals. -- In young individuals WBV performed on rotational and vertically vibrating platforms increased muscle activity in the lower limbs (Chapters 2 & 3) in part due to reflex muscle activity (Chapter 5). There was little effect on motoneuron excitability (Chapter 4) although recruitment thresholds of low and high threshold motor units increased and decreased respectively indicating a preferential effect on fast twitch fibres (Chapter 5). -- An acute bout of WBV performed with or without exercises had no effect on muscle strength, rate of force development (RFD) or power output in young individuals (Chapter 6). The production of symptoms in specific body regions to whole-body vibrations is dependent upon physiological alterations resulting from the mechanical stimulation of various organ-tissue complexes of the body. We investigated subjective response to gain an insight into the mechanical properties of the body. Fifteen subjects experienced with whole-body vibrations were included in a two-phase study in an attempt to measure qualitatively and quantitatively subjective response to longitudinal vibrations from 1 to 20 cps in a sitting position. In the first phase the complexity of body response to whole-body vibration was demonstrated since the subjects usually experienced several symptoms for each frequency tested. The second phase suggested that the sensations were resonance-dependent. Mechanical and physiological responses were correlated.
