Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 25: Observations of the Night Airglow covers the results from systematic observations of the night airglow during the two and a half year period of the International Geophysical Year and International Geophysical Cooperation (July 1957 through December 1959). Airglow refers to light other than the polar aurora, emitted by the upper atmosphere. This volume is composed of eight chapters that contain a series of tables of hourly values of the absolute zenith intensity of the airglow, arranged according to station and wavelength. The numerical results from the several observers were put on punched cards to facilitate machine printing and statistical studies. The local times are given at the top of each page, and the universal times at the bottom. The year, month and day of the observations are shown in the first three columns. The convention was adopted of using the date corresponding to the evening, thus, the entire night of 1/2 July 1957 is entered as 1 July 1957 with the understanding that the date changed to 2 July at local midnight. The rest of the book considers the instruments, procedures, and statistic study of the night airglow. This book is of great value to geophysicists.

The aim of this book is to describe and discuss the aurora as an optical phenomenon, one which can be observed by the naked eye as well as with more sensitive optical detectors. It continues the tradition of study ing that impressive and imaginative play of nature, the northern lights, seen and discussed by the Greek philosphers as early as the sixth century B.c. Today the study of the optical aurora is only one of many ways of acquiring information about a major phenomenon: the ejection of plasma from the sun, the interaction of this plasma with the geomagnetic field and the injection of fast particles into the earth's atmosphere. of the optical aurora is justified by the Hence, the separate treatment particular scientific approach: detection and interpretation of electro magnetic radiation, approximately in the 1000-100000 A region, produc ed through interaction between the auroral particles and the earth's atmosphere. Other techniques, such as radio observations, X-ray observations, direct particle detections from rockets and satellites, studies of magnetic storms, and measurements of the magnetic field and plasma properties in the magnetosphere, are as important or more important than the classical way of studying the optical aurora. Nevertheless, it was felt worthwhile to treat the optical aurora in a separate book, perhaps mainly because today one author cannot master the whole subject with sufficient competence. This book is thus one volume in a series of books giving a more complete picture of physics and chemistry in space.

This volume surveys our current scientific understanding of the terrestrial aurora. It is organized into eleven reviews detailing theoretical and observational aspects of characteristic auroral morphologies, and how these in turn are organized according to local time, latitude, and activity level. Popular descriptions often attribute the aurora to the interaction of charged particles from the solar wind with atoms in the upper atmosphere. In fact, most auroras are not the result of direct entry of solar wind particles. Rather, as detailed in this volume, auroral particle acceleration and generation of auroral forms occur primarily within the magnetosphere. Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 25: Auroral Spectrograph Data is a five-chapter text that contains tabulations of auroral spectrograph data. The patrol spectrograph built by the Perkin-Elmer Corporation for the Aurora and Airglow Program of the IGY is a high-speed, low-dispersion, automatic instrument designed to photograph spectra of aurora occurring along a given magnetic meridian of the sky. Data from each spectral frame were recorded on an IBM punched card. The data recorded on the cards are printed onto the tabulations in this volume. These tabulations are available in the World Data Centers for auroral (instrumental) observations in College, Alaska, Moscow, and Stockholm in the form of this printed volume of the IGY Annals. The remaining four chapters are data tabulations for United States, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, and U.S.S.R. stations. This book will prove useful to geophysicists.
