Book Description
Excerpt from Physical Diagnosis The exhaustion of the present edition and the persistent de mand for the book are the incentives for this revision, in the preparation of which the author has availed himself of the sug gestions contained in the kindly criticisms of the reviewers of the original edition of the work. In the preparation of the present volume the text has been largely rewritten and supplemented by new material in order to cover the recent advances in the subject. The clinical anatomy of the various thoracic and abdominal organs has been carried a step further in this edition, and the intimate correlation of anatomy, pathology, and physical signs has been emphasized throughout the text. Additional space has likewise been allotted in the present edition to the physical principles underlying the various physical signs which are generated within the thorax and abdomen in health and in disease. In the present edition, many of the borrowed illustrations of the first edition have been replaced by original drawings. The chapter dealing with the x-ray as. An aid in diagnosis has been revised and amplified by Dr. Dudley E. Mackey, of New York, formerly Instructor in Roentgenology, Cornell School of Military Roentgenology. Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook of Physical Diagnosis: Comprising the Throat, Thorax, and Abdomen The design of this handbook is to present a concise description of the various methods pursued in the clinical examination of the thoracic and abdominal organs in health and disease and an estimate of the diagnostic value of the results so obtained; the examination of the Larynx is treated of in an Appendix. The general plan of the work, both as regards the order in which the different methods of exploring each organ are discussed and the account of the conditions likely to be met with, is naturally that of a systematic, scientific inquiry. Our description, however, particularly when dealing with the purely physical methods of examination, will be found to vary considerably in form and fulness, according as groups of similar phenomena, belonging possibly to different diseases, do or do not admit of being explained by com, ?non causes; in the latter case a detailed account of the symptoms has been given. Whenever the nature of the subject permitted, I have endeavored to preserve a certain uniform order also in the arrangement of details, taking up first the signs obtained by each method of exploration, then their causes, and lastly the physiological and pathological conditions, and the diseases, in which they occur. In this way only was it practicable to include within our relatively narrow limits the large number of pathological phenomena elicited by the various modes of clinical examination. That an account of this kind, indeed, should not be absolutely complete, that it should fail to take (cognizance of every deviation of the symptoms from the fundamental pathological type, is unavoidable. Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials Physical Diagnosis of the Thorax The first edition of this book, published under the title "Outline of Physical Diagnosis of the Thorax," was chiefly intended to meet the immediate wants of my classes. From its rapid distribution it has seemed to have reached a wider field. The present edition under the new title, as published by Mr. Saunders, is a revision of the original text, with an added section setting forth the signs found in each disease of the chest. In the preparation of this synopsis I have availed myself of the works of the best writers upon Diagnosis, General Medicine, Physiology, and Anatomy, from which I have endeavored to cull the essentials of the subject in hand. To Drs. Wm. R. Parkes and John Edwin Rhodes I desire to express my thanks for their valued services rendered in the reading of the proof.
