Book Description
In April 1996, the Fort Knox contract archaeology staff conducted a phase I survey of three proposed borrow areas on Cedar Creek Range, Hardin County, Kentucky. The borrow areas encompass 4.0 ha (10 acres). Four sites were recorded in the survey. Site 15Hd523, in Borrow Area 1, and 15Hd526, in Borrow Area 3, are lithic scatters of indeterminate prehistoric affiliation. Site 15Hd524 in Borrow Area 1 and 15Hd525 near Borrow Area 1 are nineteenth or twentieth century historic sites. Due to previous disturbance, 15HdS23, 15Hd52S, and 15Hd526 are not eligible for the National Register, and no further archaeological investigation is recommended for them. Site 15Hd524 is potentially eligible for the National Register. it should be avoided, because of its archaeological potential and proximity to a creek. If 15Hd524 cannot be avoided, additional archaeological research must be conducted prior to borrowing activities to assess more fully its National Register status. If 15Hd524 is avoided or impacts mitigated through additional archaeological research, then it is recommended that the borrowing be conducted as proposed. Cedar Creek Cemetery is near Borrow Area 3. The cemetery is bermed and fenced. No impact to the cemetery is expected due to the proposed borrowing activities.

Book Description
In March and April 1994 the Fort Knox Staff Archeologist and Assistant Staff Archeologist conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of possible borrow areas for the Yano to Cedar Creek Road improvements on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin County, Kentucky. The project area encompassed 23.2 ha (57.3 acres). The study recorded 15Hd489 and 15Hd490, revisited 15Hd120 and 15Hd121, and tentatively relocated 15Hd246. 15Hd121 (Late Woodland or Mississippian) could not be adequately assessed due to field conditions. It is recommended that 15Hd121 be excluded from the borrow areas unless it is tested. Site 15Hd246, a limestone mound believed to be historic structural debris, may lie in a brush pile at the reported site location, but the brush pile prevented access to the site. It is recommended that 15Hd246 be excluded from borrowing until it can be tested, 15Hd12O (indeterminate), 15Hd489 (indeterminate), and 15Hd490 (Late Woodland) are small, prehistoric upland open habitation sites, and are not eligible for the National Register. It is recommended that, with the exception of the two sites in need of further investigation, the borrow areas be used as proposed.

Book Description
In September 1995, the Fort Knox contract archaeology staff conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of a proposed timber harvest area near the Regional Correctional Facility on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin County, Kentucky. The proposed timber harvest area is approximately 122 m (400 feet) wide and 25 m (80 feet) long, encompassing approximately 0.30 ha (0.74 acres). Only selected trees will be harvested. The total area surveyed is 580 m long and 325 m wide, encompassing approximately 6.7 ha (16.5 acres). The survey resulted in the discovery of one archaeological site, outside the proposed timber harvest area. Site 15Hd498 is a small lithic scatter, which is considered potentially eligible for the National Register in part due to field conditions not conducive to the adequate investigation of its horizontal or vertical extent. Since 15Hd498 lies completely outside the proposed timber area, it is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed.
