Book Description
Peter and Alexis is a novel by Dmitry Merezhkovsky, written in 1903-1904 and first published in Nos. 1-5, 9-12, 1904, Novy Put magazine. The third and final part of the Christ and Antichrist trilogy, it came out as a separate edition 1905, to be reissued in 1922 in Berlin, with its predecessors, The Death of the Gods and The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci, under one cover. All three novels had considerable success in Western Europe but were received coolly in Russia where the majority of the critics considered the trilogy 'tendentious' and 'scholastic'. The author sees Russia as an 'heir' to the fundamental Christ-Antichrist conflict and focuses here on Peter the Great as the "embodiment of Antichrist" (an idea he shared with Russian Old Believers) as opposed to the 'purely Christian' figure of Tsarevich Alexei.

Book Description
Peter and Alexis (1904) is a novel by Dmitriy Merezhkovsky. Having turned from his work in poetry to a new, spiritually charged interest in fiction, Merezhkovsky sought to develop his theory of the Third Testament, an apocalyptic vision of Christianity’s fulfillment in twentieth century humanity. Peter and Alexis, the final work in the trilogy, is preceded by The Death of the Gods (1895) and Resurrection of the Gods (1900). Well received internationally, The Christ and Antichrist Trilogy was largely ignored by Russian critics at the time of its publication, but has since been recognized as his most original and vital literary work. “‘Antichrist is coming. He, the last of devils, has not yet come himself; but the world is teeming with his progeny. The children are preparing the way for their father. They twist everything to suit the designs of Antichrist. He will appear in his own due time, when everywhere all is prepared and the way smoothed. He is already at the door. Soon will he enter!’” In Peter and Alexis, Merezhkovsky moves his groundbreaking vision of spiritual progress and the historical development of humanity to the world of the Russian Empire. The novel portrays Peter the Great’s conflict with his son, the Tsarevich Alexei, as the inevitable confrontation between Antichrist and Christ for the soul of humanity. Rejecting the historical view of Peter as a powerful and honorable leader, Merezhkovsky suggests that he was a tyrant whose desire for progress and control came at the cost of countless lives. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Dmitriy Merezhkovsky’s Peter and Alexis is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Description
'The natural sympathy and understanding of people everywhere must be the soil in which the new humanism can thrive.' For Daisaku Ikeda, whose words these are, education has long been one of the fundamental priorities of his work and teaching. His emphasis on the intellectual legacy bequeathed to humanity by the great teachers of civilization is in this volume encapsulated by the notion of a 'new humanism': a significant residue ofwisdom that in the right circumstances may be passed on to future generations, expanding horizons, making connections between different cultures and encouraging fresh insights and new discoveries across the globe. These circumstances are perhaps most fully realised in the context of universities. In promoting his core values of education and peace, the author has delivered lectures and speeches at more than twenty-five academies, colleges and research institutes worldwide. This stimulating collection, which includes the author's most recent lectures, ranges widely across topics as diverse as art, religion, culture and time, and draws creatively on the sages of ancient India, China and Japan as well as on visionary thinkers from every nation, including Tolstoy, Victor Hugo and Gandhi.
