Excerpt from Peruvian Art as Shown on d104iles and Pottery The Museum's collections of textiles and pottery vessels from prehistoric graves in Peru provide an opportunity for the study of primitive art that is not excelled, if, indeed, it is equaled in any other field. The great beauty of the color schemes and the wonderful number of curious conventionalized animal figures, especially in the.textiles, make these exhibits particularly valuable to the student of design. That this opportunity exists and that the Museum authorities as a part of their educational system are providing all the assistance and comfort possible to visiting artists and students are fast becoming known, as shown by the fact that for quite a number of years an average of one hundred and fifty a month have availed themselves of this privilege, while during the last few years that number has been doubled. As a large part of the students of design who make use of these textiles expect later to obtain positions in textile houses, carpet, rug, or wall paper manufactories, or to enter into some other business where designers are employed, it will interest and encourage them to know that many textile houses have lately put upon the market silks and other materials decorated with designs inspired by the figures and color schemes of the prehistoric Peruvians. Our large textile manufacturers have, year after year, sent their best artists to Paris for designs, having no idea that such a wealth of material, eminently suitable for decoration, was waiting for them in the Museum so near at hand. In the past five years many of these textile manufacturers have visited the Museum and have become aware of the existence of these collections. Having once seen them they were by no means slow in recognizing their value and in sending their artists to copy the color schemes and create designs from the decorative figures of the ancient Peruvians. Having satisfied themselves of the commercial value of the Peruvian collections to them, they naturally began to look about for the decorative work of other primitive peoples and today their designers may be seen at work in many of the Museum halls. For fineness of thread, complexity and variety of techniques, and harmonious design compositions, they are unsurpassed. The interest in these textiles is enhanced by the realization that they represent the pre-spanish archaeological periods of Peru, and consequently were developed without dependence on either Asia or the Old World. The present exhibition of pre-columbian art of Peru has been loaned by Mr. John Wise of New York. Mr. Wise has spent years assembling this collection and its excellence is due in large part to his long experience with pre - Columbian art objects from all parts of the Americas. It is unique in many ways, not only for the gamut of techniques and. Designs represented, but also for the amazing preservation of many of the pieces. Outstanding in the textile section are the complete, embroidered ponchos and shawls of the Paracas Period, the elaborate tapestries of the Tiahuanaco Period, the four pointed hats of velvet, the tie-dye patchwork ponchos, and many other pieces of unusual merit. The collection is augmented by unique examples of silver figure bowls, some fine pottery of the Early Nazc'a and Tiahuanaco Coast Periods, wooden goblets of lacquer work, and various ornaments of gold, copper, and stone. As works of art the textiles in this exhibit speak for themselves. It is unnecessary to elaborate on the range and harmony of colors, the arrangement of designs, and the subtle modifications of figure patterns to meet the demands of the technique. Excerpt from Peruvian Fabrics This paper is the sequel to the preceding, entitled Peruvian Textiles. In that paper the necessary introductory discussion left little space for consideration of the actual fabrics. This omission has been in a measure remedied in the present work. Here the discussion is almost entirely de voted to the different techniques of weaves. When it is understood that this technology is very nearly as extensive as is that of today, it will be appreciated that within reasonable limits, an exhaustive discussion of each division is impossible. In order to establish techniques, certain fabrics have been submitted to microscopic dissection. Where it was found advisable, detailed draw ings or diagrams have been made. These correspond as faithfully as possi ble to the fabrics under magnification. In every possible manner, these diagrams were verified, but it must be recalled that not only were the speci mens too valuable for the dissection of an unlimited number, but the fineness of texture and the fragile condition must be taken into account as well. Within my knowledge, no collection of archaic fabrics was ever subjected to so rigorous a technical investigation. But this was absolutely necessary. Fabrics, especially if very fine, and often differing in technique from modern webs, can never be fully understood from surface examination, be it ever so patient. In the following pages reference will be made to certain techniques and designs, which quite closely, and often exactly, correspond to Asiatic fabrics. Comparison of some kind or other was absolutely requisite in order to establish the significance of these weaves. The desire to clearly state the technical properties are all that such allusions mean. On any other question, such as intrusion, I am by no means qualified to write. That the mechanical resemblance is strong and even the artistic expression at least reminiscent, there can be no doubt; but this is perhaps sufficiently explained by the fact that in Asia and Peru, cotton, at least in their textile zenith, become the principal fiber.
