The number of religious discrimination cases has steadily increased over the years (EEOC, 2018a). One under-studied aspect of religious discrimination is religious accommodations. To successfully win a religious accommodation case, employees must prove that they requested an accommodation, have a "bona fide" belief, and have suffered as a direct result of a lack of accommodation (Kelly, 2008). To protect themselves, employers must prove that they provided an alternative reasonable accommodation and/or that the desired accommodation would cause the company an "undue" hardship (Kelly, 2008). These aspects of the law are subjective. The purpose of this study was to understand how people perceive religious accommodations in the workplace. Christian participants were asked to rate the fairness, reasonableness, and ease of implementing various religious accommodations. Results indicated that the Jewish accommodation was judged as the most reasonable. Although the Jewish and Muslim accommodation were judged as similarly easy to implement, the Muslim accommodation was judged as less reasonable. Individuals high in religious fundamentalism and general Christian belief perceived their in-group more favorably. Additionally, individuals higher in prejudice against Muslims perceived the Muslim accommodation less favorably

Religion in the workplace is an important and understudied topic. Religious discrimination litigation continues to be pervasive and is costly to organizations in many ways. This research attempts to determine if religious bias occurs during the frequently used organizational process of performance appraisal, as well as to determine whether rater religiosity and informational justice moderate rater bias during this process. This study also attempted to determine whether rater perceptions of injustice mediated the relationship between religious accommodation and performance ratings. A randomly assigned paper-vignette experiment with three conditions (control, accommodation mentioned, and accommodation mentioned with additional information related to the accommodation) was conducted using 131 American participants with work experience. The participants rated the performance of a fictional customer service employee using the task description and performance vignette provided to them. The participants also completed a perceived injustice scale and a religiosity scale. Results of the study indicate that low religiosity was related to negative bias in performance ratings when a religious accommodation was mentioned. The provision of information also had a significant effect on the performance ratings, with higher performance ratings in the information condition compared to the accommodation condition. Injustice perceptions were found to fully mediate the relationship between the mention of accommodation and lowered performance ratings but only partially mediated the relationship between the provision of information and performance ratings. Implications are discussed along with study limitations and suggestions for future research.

In the wake of same-sex marriage legalization, most religious conservatives realize that they now share a minority viewpoint on many social issues. Such change has forced those formerly trying to forestall social evolution to instead seek legal recusal from engaging in matters that conflict with their religious beliefs. Not surprisingly, these recent legislative attempts to “affirm” religious free expression all focus upon the rights of the religious adherent, while mostly failing to consider the potential harm to third parties. In the provision of government services, this omission can do significant, lasting damage to public perceptions of administrative legitimacy—often already perilously maligned. Should government officials be legally obligated to grant their employees religious accommodations that they know will result in negative public perceptions, or worse, inflict dignitary harm among citizens seeking its services? This book draws attention to the threat to effective government that proposed expansions to religious accommodation laws can create. From damaging public opinion, to the myriad implementation concerns such as what even constitutes a religious belief to be accommodated, these challenges should serve as a warning to legislators and religious accommodation advocates to reconsider application of these enhanced obligations to the civil service.
