Malaysian environmental professionals were surveyed to determine their outlook on key environmental issues related to Malaysia and to the world. Learning about environmental perceptions from local decision makers was seen as important because of the rapid economic growth of Malaysia and because of concern that this development may result in the loss of a high-quality tropical environment. Study data should be useful in providing understanding of values relating to environmental management within the country. Results showed that air pollution and waste management were perceived of as key local environmental issues, with industrial air emissions and vehicular exhaust two of the major sources of local environmental degradation. Air pollution may be the more difficult of these problems to solve, perhaps conflicting with economic development interests. Loss of critical habitat, ozone depletion and climate change were viewed as important to global-scale environmental conditions, although habitat destruction was seen as somewhat less important to the local situation. River pollution was identified as the major ecological problem in Malaysia, although drinking water quality was not seen as a critical issue. Malaysian environmental professionals' perceptions of global-scale environmental problems are consistent with much of the international environmental community, knowledge that should be helpful in negotiating future international agreements.

There is a dearth of literature on environmental communication within the non-western world. The few existing ones are scattered and not easily available.Thus, there is a dire need to document research and literature in the field. The opportunity arose at the 2009 International Conference on Communication and Environment held in Penang, Malaysia. The international conference with the theme “Transformation for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, organised by the School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), attracted scholars, practitioners and activists from around the world to listen and deliberate on various aspects of communication and environment. The post-conference review resulted in the selection of 24 papers to be compiled into this edited volume. The escalating degradation of environment locally and globally was the main concern that prompted discussions on how sustainability can be advocated. The development process in many countries, economic activities and political decisions on issues such as deforestation for timber logging, rapid urbanisation, pertinently points out that environmental degradation and any communication on environmental change has to be grounded and located within the wider context of social, politics and economics of the society. Communication and environmental communication for that matter have also to be understood within these wider contexts. Many would agree that a constant and consistent flow of information communicated through different channels to different stakeholders at the right time and destinations can help raise awareness and consciousness of environmental problems, protection and preservation. This vital information can enable the public and stakeholders to make informed choices, and take actions whenever possible. A lack of communication and information will inordinately exacerbate the situation of environmental degradation. This book thus highlights how the environment is being treated in the media, communicated to the society and impacted nations. The chapters are grouped into the following sections: Theoretical and conceptual issues; Media content and the environment; Politics, communication and the environment; Corporate social and environmental responsibility; and Citizen participation, human rights and the environment. Barriers to commercial and industrial energy efficiency improvements in Klang Valley, Malaysia are more pronounced due to the existence of factors such as weak policy and regulatory frameworks, economic and financial constraints, lack of information, and other issues. This research utilized a qualitative research methodology using a phenomenology approach aimed at enhancing the knowledge of commercial and industrial energy efficiency in Klang Valley, Malaysia by investigating the barriers associated with the implementation of energy efficiency measure. The eleven main themes and twenty-eight sub-themes identified from the study revealed that energy is poorly managed in the various commercial and industrial sectors and that there is an energy efficiency gap resulting from the low implementation of energy efficiency measures. In addition, the study revealed that the most important factors impeding the implementation of cost-effective energy efficiency technologies in the organizations are principally economic and financial barriers such as lack of budget funding and access to capital. The study also revealed that these economic and financial barriers are linked to the lack of adequate government framework for commercial and industrial energy efficiency. The study also showed that market factors related to cost reductions resulting from lowered energy use and threats of rising energy prices are the most important drivers for adapting energy efficiency technologies. To motivate energy efficiency, there should be established standards, guidelines, roadmaps, regulations, and enforcement of regulation suitable for the local environment, which at present has not been executed completely in Malaysia.
