Nurses working in unsafe may encounter physical injuries, sexual assaults, and verbal abuse, increasing the risk of developing emotional distress and psychiatric disorders. Patient violence is also a precursor to suboptimal staff productivity, job dissatisfaction, and high employee turnover. It hinders effective nurse-patient relationships, reducing the quality of therapeutic communication. The overall effect of patient violence has consequential implications to the nursing profession, patient care, and workplace safety, highlighting the need for comprehensive measures to subdue violence incidence in healthcare settings. Although the American Nurses Association (ANA) advocates for zero-tolerance of "incivility, bullying, and workplace violence," inadequate incidence reporting mechanisms limit the ability to nurture staff safety. Some staff members may dismiss covert and overt aggressiveness attributable to patients with problematic behaviors and, unfortunately, propagate unsafe working situations. Thus, effective incidence reporting policies are instrumental in promoting mitigating violent encounters from patients or their family members.

Emergency department nurses face violence in the workplace that occurs because of their patients. Nurses need to learn new ways to avoid these different violent situations in the workplace such as physical violence, psychological violence and verbal abuse that patients subject their nurses to. Among nurses in the hospital setting overseeing critical care patients are in-person classes compared to literature or handouts more effective violence prevention program to lower the rate of violence against nurses within six months. To help understand and learn more about violence prevention programs and violence in the workplace for nurses, the author uses fifteen sources, ranging from articles and journals. Using theses resources, a violence prevention class was created by the author to help emergency department nurses. The violence prevention program proposed by the author as a solution is a class that would go over the different types of violence that exists and the different types of violence that nurses experience in the workplace. The class would then talk over different ways to prevent such violent situations from occurring that would give a positive outcome for both the patient, their families and the most importantly the nurses. The class is a one-day mandatory class that all emergency department nurses are required to take in a three-month period. Other nurses are welcome to attend the class however the target audience is emergency department nurses as they are main ones that experience violence in the workplace. The goal of the class is to decrease violence in the workplace for nurses and their patients.

Patient care quality is directly related to the performance and commitment level of the nurses and how comfortable and in peace they are working in the health care facilities. This study is based on the predicament of workplace violence against nurses in the emergency rooms, as violence directly affects the willingness and work motivation of the nurses, which . The solutions proposed for the study are of tailored education and training program for health care professionals and zero-tolerance policy implantation in the health care facilities against workplace violence. These solutions are anticipated to improve the understanding of the causes of the problem and also the procedures which need to be taken when confronted with any act of workplace violence. The proposed education program will be implemented by first surveying pertinent nurses about their understanding and experience of workplace violence and later presenting the mitigation plan and legal policies through a series of lecture program and simulation activities. In the first phase of the sessions, the participants will be informed about the different emergency room procedures to be changed to reduce the probability of violence conducted by patients or their family members. In the second phase of the educational session, participants will be informed about the legal policies and procedures be adopted when any such event of violence take place. This will fulfil the primary aim of the study to devise strategic procedures for mitigating the risk factors of workplace violence against the emergency room nurses. A pilot project will be organized for the study, with duration of one month. The outcomes of the project will be evaluated through a post-session survey and Report Audit Tool.

Violence against nurses is increasing and a widespread dangerous problem in healthcare. Violent incidents are found in all areas of nursing including medical/surgical, obstetrical/gynecological, psychiatric/behavioral, intensive care, pediatrics, and long-term care. Nurses in emergency departments (ED's) face a significantly higher number of incidents of violence and assaults. This is an area that is deemed vulnerable and has the highest rate of violent attacks of all healthcare workers. These violent acts are being performed by the patients themselves but can also come from frustrated family members or friends. Nurses have a nonfatal assault rate of 31.1 per 10,000, and with this statistic, 80% of nurses feel they are not safe at work (Howerton Child 2010). When nurses experience aggression and violence towards them, they become indifferent towards their patients and less caring, leading to decrease in patient care. (Blando, 2010). In order for nurses to give patients safe care, they themselves need to feel safe in the environment in which they are working. With review of research related to workplace violence, it was noted that a need for a risk of violent behavior tool is needed to reduce number of incidents of violence. Not all situations will be avoided, depending greatly on the mental status of the patient. Using the proposed risk of violent behavior assessment tool will give nurses an indication of the risk level for a patient to become violent or act out. Having security present in the ED is necessary to enforce the zero-tolerance of violent acts. Nurses will have training and education regarding patient behaviors and recognition of aggressive behaviors upon hire and during mandatory yearly training. The implementation of a risk of violent behavior assessment tool will be added into electronic charting of each new patient in the ED. Prevention is most important requiring training and evaluation through proper screening of those that may become violent (Dillon, 2010) as well as adding a warning marker to patients chart to alert nursing staff of offenders (Houghton, 2013). This tool will alert nurses of a potential of violent behavior from a patient, so that more frequent assessment and monitoring can be put into practice. This tool is to decrease the number of violent incidents towards nurses in the emergency department.
