Book Description
In the Author's Note to the first edition Professor Robinson wrote that there was "a need for something of an elementary nature which should be of value to the student who takes up Syriac for the first time. A book of paradigms and exercises is especially desirable in the case of those who have had no previous experience of Semitic languages ... it is designed as an introduction, and an introduction only." The steady demand for the grammar since then has shown that the need remains and that this grammar has gone some way to meet it. The printing of a new edition has given the opportunity of expanding the grammar slightly, chiefly by adding some explanatory notes and one or two further rules of syntax, and of providing more help to pronunciation by printing diacritic points more fully throughout. It remains an introduction only, and the more advanced student will still need to refer to larger grammars. - Preface to the fourth edition.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Syriac Grammar But the great claim as it appears to me, which the Syriac has on the attention of that class of persons, for whose use this book is intended, consists in the Syriac New Testament. The high antiquity of this Version and its use in the early established Syriac Church stamp an importance on it, which can be assigned to no other, and if to these circumstances be added another, that the Syriac Language is so nearly the same as that spoken in Palestine in the first age of Christianity, that by many persons it has been termed the vernacular language of our Lord, it must be allowed that the. Book Description
Excerpt from Uhlemann's Syriac Grammar: With a Course of Exercises in Syriac Grammar, and a Chrestomathy and Brief Lexicon The translation is followed by a course of Exercises in Syriac grammar, which, if carefully studied, will, it is believed, mate rially facilitate the progress of the learner in an accurate know ledge of the elements of the language. After having read, with care, the introduction, and cursorily examined other parts of the grammar, the pupil may, at once, commence upon the Exercises, and merely consult the grammar (as directed in the introductory remarks to the Exercises) as a book of reference, in order to enable him to solve the difficulties with which he may meet in analyzing the first page of the Chrestomathy. The translator trusts that he shall not be considered as obtrusive in calling Special attention to a method of analysis which he has found to be of great advantage in teaching classes in Hebrew. Some in structors have probably adopted a similar one, and others may have devised still better methods. This is submitted to the con sideration of these teachers who have not already adopted a satisfactory one. A brief Chrestomathy and Lexicon, prepared by the transla tor, follow the Exercises. The former is composed of selections from that beautiful edition of the Peshito Bible published by the British and Foreign Bible Society in London, in 1816, and reprinted in smaller type in 1826. It was executed for the use of the Syrian Christians in India. It was corrected for the press, as far as the Acts of the Apostles, by Dr. Buchanan, and com pleted by Rev. S. Lee, Professor of Arabic in the University of Cambridge. Several manuscripts were consulted, and the text is considered as very correct, though we have discovered in it some typographical errors.
