Taken between 2008 and 2013 in New York, Lisbon, Paris and Berlin as well as in the French and Portuguese countryside, these photographs by Paulo Nozolino bear his usual dark symbolic syntax. Still using 35mm film and occasionally a flash, this tight sequence of vertical pictures shows us, once again, his everlasting concern for the state of the world and his quest for the pure, true, non-manipulated analogic image. This is a bright obscure piece. The transparency of the black shows a world that is continually destroying itself. Closer to the certitude of an end. The decadence of the place. Life by a thread, leaving traces of light. This is where we came to. This is where we are. All we have left is putrefaction, garbage, claustral confinement, a quiet decay that embraces slow death. So slow that we still may believe it might never come. We see her, we feel her, we touch her with our own hands. Yet. We are responsible for the disease but we don't know how to escape from it. We were hungry and we ate. We are dreaming about the crumbs that we left behind. Unwise. Eyes on the floor, there is no redeeming act. Prisoners of a dirty and corrupted matter. Emptiness. Colin Westerbeck's criterion in choosing the 100 photographs published here was to seek out underappreciated work by great photographers and great work by underappreciated photographers. These 100 prints have all been drawn from the many thousands in the inventory of Howard Greenberg Gallery. Westerbeck was particularly drawn to Greenberg's wide-ranging taste in both American and European photography of the twentieth century. The resulting book bears the name A Democracy of Imagery because Westerbeck believes all the works it contains should be considered equal. Each has been selected for its individuality - indeed, its idiosyncrasy - rather than its similarity to or compatibility with other images. This intimate book explores Broy Lim_s realization of his homosexuality in his hometown of Singapore, where it still remains illegal. Combining personal texts and photos, and now they know narrates Lim_s sexual identity and his nine-year relationship with his partner, while also representing the broader struggle of many youths who navigate their sense of self in conservative heteronormative societies. Lim begins the book with handwritten texts that establish his confessional tone: _My truth has always been an untouchable, unspeakable illusion / I want to be unlimited too _ I want to ascend to your paradise, to escape this inferno._ Such thoughts reoccur and give autobiographic nuance to his suggestive, hushed photos which include self-portraits, still lifes and landscapes. This lyrical interplay between text and image captures a sense of the often unspoken norms which Lim has overcome and his _open secret_ that for many years even his family could only speculate on.
