Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Introduction to the Hebrew Bible The following chapters have formed substantially the groundwork of basis of a series of lectures introductory to the study of the Old Testament, which for several years past have been delivered at the Wesleyan College, Richmond. I have ventured to dedicate them accordingly to my fellow-students, past and present, to some of whom, I would fain trust, the memory of studies pursued in common may prove as pleasant as it has often been to me. It has been my aim throughout rather to stimulate and suggest, than ex cathedra to instruct; and I have been led to publish in the hope that others also, students in a broader field, may find herein interest and aid. That the lectures make no pretension to exhaustiveness, on a theme amongst the most enravelled that the human mind can essay to resolve, will be patent to all. In every instance, however, I have sought to indicate lines of profitable or necessary research, and of set purpose have refrained from attempting to discuss details or to present and criticise the varying conclusions and results of many minds. Book Description
Excerpt from Introduction to the Massoretico-Critical Edition of the Hebrew Bible Nothing can be more explicit than the directions given in the canon before us as to the Order of the books. Yet, the oldest dated Biblical ms. Which has come to light deviates from this order. The St. Petersburg Codex which is dated A. D. 916 and which contains only the Latter Prophets has yet a List of all the Prophets, both Former and Latter, and in this List the order is given as follows: The Former Prophets - Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings; the Latter Prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the Minor Prophets. 1 Here, then, the sequence of the Latter Prophets is not that which is prescribed in the Talmud. Book Description
John J. Collins's A Short Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is one of the most popular introductory textbooks in colleges and seminary classrooms. Enriched by decades of classroom teaching, it is aimed explicitly at motivated students, regardless of their previous exposure to the Bible or faith commitments. This more compact version of Collins's renowned Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is combined with even more student-friendly features, including charts, maps, photographs, chapter summaries, and bibliographies for further reading. Collins proceeds through the canon of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, judiciously presenting the current state of historical, archaeological, and literary understanding of the biblical text, and engaging the student in questions of significance and interpretation for the contemporary world. The third edition is presented in a new and engaging format with new maps and images. An index has been added to the volume for the first time.
