The Place of Music
Author: Andrew Leyshon
Publisher: Guilford Press
ISBN: 9781572303140
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 340
Book Description
Music is omnipresent in human society, but its language can no longer be regarded as transcendent or universal. Like other art forms, music is produced and consumed within complex economic, cultural, and political frameworks in different places and at different historical moments. Taking an explicitly spatial approach, this unique interdisciplinary text explores the role played by music in the formation and articulation of geographical imaginations--local, regional, national, and global. Contributors show how music's facility to be recorded, stored, and broadcast; to be performed and received in private and public; and to rouse intense emotional responses for individuals and groups make it a key force in the definition of a place. Covering rich and varied terrain--from Victorian England, to 1960s Los Angeles, to the offices of Sony and Time-Warner and the landscapes of the American Depression--the volume addresses such topics as the evolution of musical genres, the globalization of music production and marketing, alternative and hybridized music scenes as sites of localized resistance, the nature of soundscapes, and issues of migration and national identity.

Our Place
Author: Terry Gabbard

ISBN: 9781619590489
Category : Docks
Languages : en
Pages : 32
Book Description
The unassuming location of a dock extending out onto a small lake serves as the backdrop for five different stories. On a cool autumn night, Jake arrives with Holly at a secluded spot. The couple feels an immediate connection to this place as if it were put there just for them. Things seem perfect until Anne and her date, Lyle, arrive. On another day, early in the morning, Beth has plans to spend the day with her dad at their favorite fishing place. She has high hopes for catching some sunshine, a few fish, and her dad's fading memories. The third story involves Al, who arrives at the dock with his family and has high expectations for their family canoe trip. The only problem is that his wife would rather stay inside, his son has a chip on his shoulder, and his daughter is really weird. In the fourth story, Cory and Liberty are having a picnic lunch out by the lake, but a realization about tuna-fish sandwiches sends a shockwave through their relationship and brings about questions of who they are and what lies ahead for them. In the fifth story, Stanley escapes the hardships of his life to blow off some steam on the dock when Sidney, his 6-year-old sister, arrives. All he wants is for her to go away, but she insists on staying with him. The entire ensemble gathers on the dock together for the final scene. In a poetic epilogue, they all discover the true meaning of Our Place-- both comedic and tragic.

Category : Poetry

Pages : 167
Book Description
PAPER VOICES From the pages of my varied experiences, I speak to you, Ladies, not from the heart of a bosom but from the heart of my seasoned soul. Hence, the title, Paper Voices, accurately reflects my mode of sharing life, life with its dueling dynamics of simplicity versus complexity, life as it presents itself to us, as women. In Paper Voices we will share the good, the bad, the not so good and the downright ridiculous. We will laugh together and cry together. We will be Sisters in the most refined sense of the word. Some of you may wonder why Marilyn; why read from her pages; why listen to her voice? I ask, Ladies, why not me? Why not from a baby boomer who is gingerly sprinting into her sixth decade of life? Why not reap the benefits of seeds sown by a seasoned Sister who has mastered the art of listening, a woman wise enough to listen to God first, foremost and always? Ive been a child and an adult/a mother and a wife/a loyal lover, a faithful friend/ and a helping and watchful neighbor. Ive been victim and victor/suffered ups and downs/Ive run cold and hot/and Ive been right and Ive been wrong. I have a style of humor that can only be described as unique. Again, Ladies, why not me? Ive tried to accentuate the positive and minimize the negative. Im far from perfect; Im a multi-flawed me. And, although I have affected some bad choices, I made the good decision to live a humble and Godly life, a life in which I believe God is pleased. Why me, Ladies? Because the favor of the Lord says so. It was with favor that I received the words for Paper Voices, and it is with confidence in their truths and wisdom that I believe its Gods Will that you too will be blessed. Now, Ladies, lets have at it. Paper Voices: From the page to the heart unabashedly saying this, that, the other and more. Paper Voices: Its all about us, all about the commonalities of our richly diverse lives. Well meet again at the end of the journey.

A Song to Sing, a Life to Live
Author: Don Saliers
Publisher: Fortress Press
ISBN: 1506454720
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
Celebrating the spirit of song In A Song to Sing, a Life to Live, Don and Emily Saliers help readers see the connections between Saturday night music and Sunday morning music by exploring the spiritual dimensions of music itself. They tell the stories of their own lives in music, and they share what they have learned and observed about the power of music in human life. They help us appreciate the joy of music and also how music carries us into places of sorrow, where we must go if we are to live with honesty about ourselves and compassion for others. This book is for churchgoers and spiritual seekers alike. Music is described in terms of spiritual practice; it has the power to embrace those who are deeply immersed in the life of Christian faith and speak to those who are spiritual but may question formal religion. The book explores a wide variety of musical traditions and offers an invitation to embrace a broader and deeper vision of the power of music and the spiritual dimensions of attentive listening. "This is a beautiful expression of music as many things--healer, gift, symbol of freedom and community, and agent of change" (Mary Chapin Carpenter).
