Playing with Scripture
Author: Andrew Judd
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1003831451
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 210
Book Description
This book puts a creative new reading of Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics and literary genre theory to work on the problem of Scripture. Reading texts as Scripture brings two hermeneutical assumptions into tension: that the text will continually say something new and relevant to the present situation, and that the text has stability and authority over readers. Given how contested the Bible’s meaning is, how is it possible to ‘read Scripture’ as authoritative and relevant? Rather than anchor meaning in author, text or reader, Gadamer’s phenomenological model of hermeneutical experience as Spiel (‘play’) offers a dynamic, intersubjective account of how understanding happens, avoiding the dead end of the subjective–objective dichotomy. Modern genre theory addresses some of the criticisms of Gadamer, accounting for the different roles played by readers in different genres using the new term Lesespiel (‘reading game’). This is tested in three case studies of contested texts: the recontextualization of psalms in the book of Acts, the use of Hagar’s story (Genesis 16) in nineteenth-century debates over slavery and the troubling reception history of the rape and murder in Gibeah (Judges 19). In each study, the application of ancient text to contemporary situation is neither arbitrary, nor slavishly bound to tradition, but playful.

Fire Starters
Author: Richard J. Sklba
Publisher: Liturgical Press
ISBN: 0814634168
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 625
Book Description
Though daily Mass is held most frequently, resources for daily homilies can be in short supply. In this book, Bishop Sklba offers a rich collection of ideas — fire starters — for preparing brief, spiritually nourishing homilies for daily Eucharist. Like building a campfire, where one ignites the logs with more easily flammable paper, these fire starters" are intended to provide the spark for weekday homilies. God's Spirit provides the flame. Each day, the biblical citations and summary phrases for the reading and the gospel plus the refrain from the psalm are provided. After each citation, Bishop Sklba offers a series of meaningful insights from his expertise as a Scripture scholar, prayerful study of Scripture, and many years of preaching and pastoral experience. These brief entries provide knowledge and inspiration that will stimulate personal prayer and spark homily possibilities for the preacher every day. Fire Starters will support anyone privileged to be called to leadership at weekday celebrations of the Eucharist to prepare for the important ministry of preaching. Bishop Richard J. Sklba served as auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee for over thirty years. He is a well-known biblical scholar, completing the licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He is a member and former president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America. He has served on many committees of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, chairing its subcommittee on the Review of Scripture Translations from 1991 to 2001. In 1988, he received the Catholic Theological Society of America's John Courtney Murray Award for achievement in theology. "

NEW TESTAMENT CONTEXTUAL COMMENTARY
Author: Dr. Robert R. Seyda
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 917
Book Description
The Apostle John tells his readers, he has an important message to tell them. It is about a person who was already there before the beginning of the world. We heard him speak. We’ve seen Him with our own eyes. We watched Him and we touched Him. He is the Word that gives us life with God. This is the message: God is completely good and pure. He is like light. There is nothing dark about Him. Amazingly, John tells us that one of the things Jesus wanted us to understand is that by loving others we love God. Yes, we do make mistakes and so do other believers but we are not to hold that against them because just as we were given forgiveness by God’s mercy and grace since we are in union with His Son, so can they. What we are not to do is claim access to this privilege but then live like those in the world. Our goal is not just life, but eternal life. After all, we are God’s children and no child of God keeps on sinning after they are born again through Jesus the Anointed One.

The Mighty Hand of God for Times Like These
Author: Matt Buckles
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1664295860
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 541
Book Description
Do you ever wonder what the Bible means when referring to the mighty hand of God or how His hand would apply to your own life? Matt Buckles and his daughter Kendra Watson, both devoted believers, weave biblical references to the hand of God with real-life stories to ignite the faith of believers and to inspire nonbelievers to find the Lord. They reveal how the hand of God is still at work, showing the truth of what is in God’s heart and how He keeps His promises to those who believe. They also answer questions such as: • How can we make a spiritual connection between the biblical account of God’s hand at work to His hand upon us today? • What can we learn from examples that seem to suggest we are trapped in a downward spiral of humanity? • How can we defend the historical Christian faith and oppose the progressive, deadly version of it? Fellow believers must unite to trust, love, and serve our Heavenly Father, who seeks to work in each one of you, as He has done in us. By spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and extending His kingdom through discipleship, you’ll be carrying out what God wants you to know and do.
