Book Description
Designed for the tourist seeking a fresh, authentic, Roman experience, this intimate, stimulating guide explores Rome's splendid modern architecture, its bustling close-in neighborhoods, and its rivers, magnificent fountains, and aqueducts. Itineraries take the reader to Fascist and occupied Rome of World War II, the nearby Alban Hills, and the Eternal City's lesser-known green spaces. Innovative chapters feature cultural and artistic Rome, including art galleries, jazz clubs, film locations, and rooftop bars--even places that offer a sumptuous (and free) "vernissage" of wine and hors d'oeuvres. With Bill and Dianne as guides-their voices part of the experience-the curious traveler will discover a housing project built under Mussolini; ascend a little-known holy Roman road on the city's outskirts; spend an evening in the out-of-the-way, artsy neighborhood of Pigneto; enjoy a trattoria where only Italians eat; and, among the book's many informative, creative "sidebars," find in one the troubling story of Rome's Jewish community, and in another locate sites in "Angels & Demons." 16 maps, 70 photos, an index, and detailed directions and instructions (including websites) make this "new" Rome easily accessible. For the frugally-minded, at times adventurous (at times armchair) traveler. Foreword by Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni.

Book Description
The sun sets on a seemingly normal day over the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Ostia Antica. A groundskeeper tends to his duties and is kept company by the cats that inhabit the nooks and shadows of the historical site. A seemingly normal dinner after work turns sideways as he loses consciousness and is jarred awake to find an eerie new reality. Led by one of his feline friends, he finds himself back at the gates of Ostia Antica and what lies beyond is a sight beyond words. A visual feast, this silent graphic novel manages to tell a story with extreme clarity and an ever-increasing sense of richness and mystery.

Book Description
This monograph provides a brief introduction to the material history of Ostia, Rome's harbour town from ca 300 BC until ca AD 600, before centering on about one hundred Latin as well as some Greek inscriptions, some of which are previously unpublished. It focuses on inscriptions which are still present in situ, in forty-two places. They range in date from ca 100 BC until ca AD 420. They belong to and cast light upon buildings, monuments, urban spaces and tombs. Some of them were reused in floors after ca AD 250. Each inscription is presented in full, supplemented by abbreviated names and words, translated into English, dated and commented upon from a contextual point of view. Sometimes inscriptions that are not in situ, as well as relevant ancient texts, are quoted and translated in order to sketch a broader picture. The comments are based on a critical evaluation of the most recent archaeological, historical and epigraphic publications. Several new interpretations result from own research. The inscriptions cast light upon political, socio-economic, religious (pagan and Christian), and funerary aspects of the multi-ethnic Ostian society, its relation with Rome and the Mediterranean world. The publication is intended not only for scholars, teachers and students, but also for historians, classicists, philologists, linguists, epigraphists, archaeologists and art historians. It may also prove a useful vademecum for those who intend to visit or have visited Ostia Antica.

Book Description
This monographfocuses on one of the most interesting sections of the Main Forum of OstiaAntica, the ancient commercial port of Rome, during the 2nd-6thcenturies AD. With a detailed 3D reconstruction of all collected information,it is possible to gain detailed insights into the development and destructionof the city centre during the transition from Antiquity to the Early MiddleAges. The applied 3Dvolume map in this study makes this possible by combining 2D, 2.5D and 3Dsolid objects inside a real geo-space. It completes the 3D space, generallyfilled with hollow objects, with content. With this work,Undine Lieberwirth gives archaeologists a free and open ready-to-use tool. Theresulting space-time model of archaeological stratigraphy, geophysics andpedology opens new perspectives on 3D documentation and 3D analysis ofarchaeological and archaeology-related data. Her intention is not only topreserve archaeological excavation data in the best way possible but also toprepare them for future 3D and 4D analysis. The digital 3D cartography offersthe perfect framework for this. To represent these 3D modelsappropriately, the usual 2D images in this monograph are replaced with 8videos.

Book Description
This guide brings the work of one of the best known scholars of Roman archeology and art to an English-language audience. Conveniently organized by walking tours and illustrated throughout with clear maps, drawings, and plans, it covers all of the city's ancient sites (including the Capitoline, the Forum, the Palatine Hill, the Valley of the Colosseum, the Esquiline, the Caelian, the Quirinal, and the Campus Martius), and, unlike most other guides, now includes the major monuments in a large area outside Rome proper but within easy reach, such as Ostia Antica, Palestrina, Tivoli, and the many areas of interest along the ancient Roman roads. An essential resource for tourists interested in a deeper understanding of Rome's classical remains, it is also the ideal book for students and scholars approaching the ancient history of one of the world's most fascinating cities.--From publisher description.
