This book re-examines the endosymbiotic theory, and presents various related theories and hypotheses since the first proposal in 1905 by a Russian biologist. It also demonstrates that Lynn Margulis’s contribution to the current endosymbiotic is less than sometimes thought, and presents a plausible idea on how the organelles were formed. Explaining that Margulis’s initial work did not intend to show the endosymbiotic origin of chloroplasts and mitochondria, the book discusses their endosymbiotic origin in the light of current biology with the help of clear visual images. H. F. LINSKENS and J. HESLOP-HARRISON The chapters of this volume deal with intercellular interaction phenomena in plants. Collectively they provide a broad conspectus of a highly active, if greatly fragmented, research field. Certain limitations have been imposed on the subject matter, the most impor tant being the exclusion of long-range interactions within the plant body. It is true that pervasive hormonal control systems cannot readily be demarcated from controls mediated by pheromones or information-carrying molecules with more limited spheres of action, but consideration is given in this volume to the main classes of plant hormones and their functions only incidentally, since these are treated adequately in other volumes of this Encyclopedia series (V - ume 9-11) and in numerous other texts and reviews. Similarly, certain other effects, such as those associated with nutrients and ions, are not considered in any detail. Furthermore, we have excluded intracellular interactions, and also consideration of transport phenomena, which are treated in detail in Vol ume 3 of this Series. Other aspects of inter-cellular interaction, such as cell surface phenomena and implications of lectin-carbohydrate interactions, and plant-virus inter-relationships, are treated in other sections of this Encyclopedia (Volumes 13B and 14B, respectively). In the volume on physiological plant pathology (Volume 4 of this series) special attention has been given to host pathogen interaction. These aspects of our subject will therefore be excluded in the present treatise.

The present review is based on the data of the literature, and on the personal experience gained by the author in recent years by studying the histogenesis of spinal ganglia. Probably, the reader will find more than one gap in the biblio graphy. The author would like to point out that in no case are such gaps due to the voluntary omission of any information, interpretations, or views. The gaps are due only to the difficulties met in trying to master such a vast literature consisting of so many contributions which have appeared over more than a century. An endeavour has been made to report not only the morphological data, but also, whenever possible, information derived from histochemical and biochemical studies. 11. Origin 01 the Spinal Ganglia Before 1868 it was generally thought (see, e.g., Remak, 1851; Bidder and Küpffer, 1857) that the spinal ganglia arise from the mesoblast of the protoverte brae (old term for somites). In 1868 His showed that the nerve cells of the spinal ganglia take their origin from the ectoderm, and more precisely from a thin band of ectoderm (Zwischenstrang, neural crest) flanking each side of the neural plate (Fig. 1 a) and interposed between it and the somatic ectoderm (Hornblatt). On this subject His (1879) wrote in a later paper " ... die spinalen Ganglien ... aus einem schmalen Substanz streifen hervorgehen, welche zwischen der Medullarplatte und dem Hornblatte gelegen ist und dessen Material ich als Zwischenstrang bezeichnet habe."

A comprehensive review of the Golgi apparatus and its functioning would require a multi-volume publication and not a monograph and it would be so repetitious as to discourage the reader. The requirement at this stage is for a reinterpretation of the character and functioning of this organelle since the last major interpretations have concentrated on its role in secretion and it has now been shown to be a component of essentially all cells whether or not they have been traditionally emphasized as secreting cells. As a conse quence the efforts have been placed on the common characteristics of the organelle, a postulate concerning its functioning in cells generally, and the details of variations where these seem important. The major acknowledgment of assistance in compiling the material must go to the investigators whose contributions, sometimes positive and sometimes of a character to spur additional investigations, allowed the development of this postulate. The paper has been prepared with the detailed assistance of Dr. MARIANNE DAUWALDER who, by her own studies and her insight into the significance of other studies, has been a working partner of many years in the development of a general hypothesis and whose knowledge of investiga tions of the Golgi apparatus is great enough to let her call attention to instances of support and contention with the general functional hypothesis that has been involved.
