En el principio eran los griegos. No podía plantearse una enciclopedia de filosofía sin atender a la filosofía antigua y, dentro de ella, a la griega. Fueron los jónicos, en el siglo VI a.C., los que no se contentaron, a la hora de preguntarse por las cosas de la vida, con explicaciones míticas. Querían razones. Así se produjo el paso del mito al logos. Este volumen ofrece una síntesis del momento matinal de la filosofía, que abarca ocho siglos. Comienza preguntándose por qué ahí, en Jonia, por qué nombres como Tales de Mileto, inauguran la historia del pensar filosófico. Se nos dirá que porque ahí se da una democratización del saber y de la palabra y la difusión de la escritura. Eso convierte a Grecia en un lugar privilegiado para la reflexión crítica, en el marco de una cultura ilustrada y muy atenta a los conocimientos culturales que venían de Oriente. Así aparece el 'philosophos' que desplaza al 'sophos' como maestro de la verdad. Ese especimen humano, una vez nacido, no ha dejado de desarrollarse. Pero hasta para eso tiene que visitar una y otra vez Grecia. No hay que olvidar que para reconstruir ese momento originario de la filosofía sólo nos quedan –salvo excepciones– fragmentos. Eso quiere decir que la interpretación es fundamental. Pues bien, el lector verá que, gracias a la agudeza interpretativa, hemos podido rectificar prejuicios y tomarnos en serio a los cínicos, epicureos o escépticos. El carácter sintético del libro da la mano a una voluntad innovadora. Una visión, pues, panorámica de la filosofía griega en sus tres fases clásicas: la preplatónica, la de Platón y Aristóteles y la de las escuelas posteriores del helenismo y el Imperio romano.
