Book Description
Make a life-changing pilgrimage, beginning this Advent. While the world rushes, you'll slow down. While others are distracted, you'll find focus. When everything seems dark, you'll see light. Oriens: a Latin word meaning "rising" and "dawn." Your Oriens journey begins on the First Sunday of Advent and continues until the feast of the Presentation on February 2. Every day, you'll take a step closer to "the dawn from on high." Father Joel Alexander Sember is your guide on an entirely new pilgrimage, one in which you will learn what God is revealing to you, uniquely, through Scripture and prayer. In Oriens: A Pilgrimage Through Advent and Christmas, you'll learn how to pray, or to pray more deeply. Each day you'll read a Scripture passage, receive Father Joel's guidance on how to pray with that passage, and find questions for reflection and journaling. If in years past you have found yourself reaching Christmas only to wonder how you missed Advent, this book will speak to you. If other Advent reflection books have seemed shallow or unfulfilling, this book will open your heart to hearing the voice of God. Welcome, Oriens pilgrim. "Fr. Joel has written a warm and practical guide for our pilgrimage through the liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas. Derived from his experiences as a pastor, spiritual director, and pilgrim himself, this book will guide all who read it into a deeper friendship with Jesus Christ. During this time of uncertainty and spiritual hunger, this simple yet profound book reminds all of us that God has come to save us and to give us hope." — Bishop David L. Ricken, Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconin "Fr. Joel Sember's Advent resource, Oriens: A Pilgrimage through Advent and Christmas, provides an accessible and practical guide for personal prayer as the Church prepares for and celebrates the birth of Christ. By design, Fr. Sember avoids writing meditations based on the season's Scriptures. Instead, he shares daily encouragement for people who want to encounter the Lord for themselves through the beautiful biblical passages drawn from the Church's liturgy in these weeks. Using the analogy of a walking pilgrimage to describe the annual journey though Advent and Christmas, Fr. Sember fosters the journey of the heart of the Christian, who desires to enter into a deeper personal relationship with the Lord. Fr. Sember's approach in helping people to notice how the Lord is addressing them uniquely will help many people to experience the Lord's presence more deeply in their own lives."—Fr. Jim Rafferty, director of spiritual formation at the Institute for Priestly Formation "A delight to read, Fr. Joel Sember provides an opportunity for our Advent journey to be one grounded in the rhythm of prayer and pilgrimage. With great joy and humility, Fr. Joel combines wisdom from the Scriptures with impactful lessons from his own life. A gem of a book!"—Julianne Stanz, Director of Parish Life and Evangelization, Diocese of Green Bay "The Catholic faithful want to know how to enter into the depths of prayer. They want to go beyond just mealtime, bedtime, and scripted prayers. Fr. Joel Sember teaches methods of prayer for the seasons of Advent and Christmas, allowing all the faithful to take their communication to and with God to the next level." — Fr. Edward Looney, author of A Rosary Litany

Book Description
Burial and Memorial explores funerary and commemorative archaeology A.D. 284-650, across the late antique world. This second volume includes papers exploring all aspects of funerary archaeology, from scientific samples in graves, to grave goods and tomb robbing and a bibliographic essay. It brings into focus neglected regions not usually considered by funerary archaeologists in NW Europe, such as the Levant, where burial archaeology is rich in grave good, to Sicily and Sardinia, where post-mortem offerings and burial manipulations are well-attested. We also hear from excavations in Britain, from Canterbury and London, and see astonishing fruits from the application of science to graves recently excavated in Trier.

Book Description
Although empires have played a decisive role in political thinking and the orientation of political goals at all times, the focus of research has so far mostly been on spatial and ideological aspects. This volume, on the other hand, offers a multi-disciplinary collection of studies that deal with the instrumentalization and ongoing impacts of perspectives on empire and their place in time. Coming from archaeology, history, art history, literary studies, and social sciences, the individual case studies discuss perceptions of imperial histories and imagined futures of empires, both in imperial and in post-imperial contexts. The transcending historical significance of the imperial ideas and ideals shows the deep and long-lasting effects of empire in landscapes, mindscapes, and social structures. The diachronic cut through all epochs from antiquity to modern times is complemented by a broad global view to deepen the temporal understanding of imperial imaginaries as well as their political implications.

Book Description
This book examines the role of Europeans who settled in the Ottoman Empire between the 16th and 19th centuries and assumed “Ottoman identity”, be it by way of conversion to Islam and assimilating to the host society or by becoming loyal servants or subjects of the Ottoman state, identifying themselves as Ottomans, but retaining their faith. Bringing together a variety of case studies that reflect a broad range of individual experiences in changing historical circumstances, the book provides a detailed study of the process of Ottomanization. The book draws upon a variety of archival and other sources such as travelogues, diaries and folk epics, including lesser known examples, from early-modern Czech, Venetian and Wallachian views of converts, to case studies of 19th century British, German and Austrians who switched loyalty. They show that this process depended on a range of factors, from conversion, to integration into the culture of the ruling elites, fluency in the language, affiliation through family ties or marriage, and, most importantly, social status and professional rank.

Book Description
Echoing the famous "The Limits to Growth" report from 1972, this edited volume analyses the changes that the World System has undergone to the present, on the fiftieth anniversary of the original report. During the past fifty years, both the concept and understanding of these limits have significantly changed. This book highlights that the evolution of the World System has approached a new critical milestone, moving into a fundamentally new phase of historical development, when the old economic and social technologies no longer work as efficiently as before or even begin to function counterproductively, which leads the World System into a systemic crisis. The book discusses the transition of human society to a new phase state, the shape of which has not yet been determined. New approaches are needed for both, for the analysis of the global situation, and for forecasts. The book is based on an integrated approach including the world-systems, historical and evolutionary perspectives, as well as a systematic view of society, in which changes in one subsystem cause transformations in others. Through mathematical modeling, it defines the main vectors of transformations of the World System; makes a detailed forecast of the development of all the main subsystems of the society and the World System, while presenting horizons of changes from short-term to ultra-long-term; and presents different development scenarios as well as recommendations on how to achieve a transition to the most favorable scenario. The book will appeal to members and followers of the Club of Rome, policy-makers, as well as to scholars from various disciplines interested in a better understanding of the World System evolution, global futures, development studies, climate change, and future societies.

Book Description
In the early twentieth century the relevance of chirality to the pharmaceutical industry was established by the fact that one enantiomer of hyoscyamine possessed greater pharmacological activity than the other. Today, most new drugs and those under development consist of a single optically active isomer, and chirality is also becoming an issue for the agrochemical and other industries. Regulatory agencies throughout the world are currently reviewing the importance of chirality with regard to pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. New guidelines from such agencies have been key drivers for the focus on single enantiomer products in these industries. These scientific and regulatory developments have created the need for a guide for workers in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries seeking information on chiral molecules, processes, and commercially available chiral chemicals. Chiral Drugs is a comprehensive listing of over 2500 chiral drugs, classified by therapeutic class, and including structures and physical properties for each entry in the listing. Its companion volume, Chiral Intermediates, presents the same detailed information for over 4700 commercially available chiral chemicals. The 'Chiral Pool' of readily available, relatively inexpensive chiral compounds has been expanding at a rapid rate as more and more products are produced in large quantities at economical prices. New developments in various technologies for isolating, preparing, and purifying chiral materials have greatly increased the opportunities for utilizing optically pure compounds in commercial applications. Novel techniques for classical resolution, new methodologies for developing selective enzymes for biocatalysis, advances in the application of microorganisms for chemical production, and continued progress in the area of asymmetric synthesis have all contributed to the growth of this field. Part One of each book contains four chapters which provide an introduction to topics relevant to the field of chiral chemistry and includes a brief overview of chirality, a short discussion on the current market drivers in the area of chiral chemistry, and a basic presentation of the various sources and methods for obtaining chiral compounds. Part Two presents entries for over 2500 chiral drugs, classified by therapeutic class. For each main entry, the chemical name and a list of trade names and synonyms is provided; the CAS Registry Number, the European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances (EINECS) number, and the Merck Index (12th edition) number are given when available. The physical properties, including specific rotation, of each compound are described and indicated applications are presented. The structure of nearly every compound is provided, and the manufacturers and suppliers of the compounds are also given. Indexes, including a master index of names and synonyms and an index of custom manufacturing services for production of chiral compounds, are appended. Chiral Drugs provides an introduction to the types of sources and methods currently in use for obtaining chiral molecules and is an invaluable resource for researchers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors as well as to those working in the basic biochemical sciences. Chiral Intermediates provides an introduction to the types of sources and methods currently in use for obtaining chiral molecules and is an invaluable resource for information on available chiral molecules. Chiral Intermediates and Chiral Drugs are the most comprehensive and detailed guides to chiral compounds available.
