Book Description
Excerpt from Orations and Speeches, Vol. 2 of 2 But according to this View, the robber on land, who places his pistol at the breast of the traveller, the pirate who threatens life on the high seas, and the riotous dis turber of the public peace, who puts life in jeopardy at home, cannot be Opposed by the sacrifice Of life. Of course, all who subscribe to this renunciation Of the privilege of self-defence, must join with us in efforts to abolish the Arbitrament of War. But our appeal is addressed to the larger number, who make no such application of the Christian precepts, who recognize the right of self-defence as belonging to each' individual, and who believe in the necessity at times of sorrowfully exercising this right, whether against a robber, a pirate, or a mob. Book Description
Excerpt from Orations and Speeches on Various Occasions, Vol. 2 The short speeches made in England were nearly all in reply to toasts, in which complimentary reference was had to the diplomatic body generally, or to the American min ister, when he alone happened to be present. The usages Of society (the same in this respect on both sides Of the water) impose a certain character upon speeches made under such circumstances. A few Obvious topics Of remark are almost of necessity apt to be repeated. TO attempt to avoid such repetition would be an unprofitable, probably an unavailing, exercise of ingenuity; but I hope it will be thought that -i have not, in the speeches now alluded to, dwelt entirely in the commonplaces Of such occasions. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Rhetoric and Oratory, Vol. 2 of 2: Delivered to the Classes of Senior and Junior Sophisters in Harvard University Finally the discourse may apply to several propositions, entirely distinct and separate from each other. In such cases the orator is sometimes compelled by the abundance of his subject to di vide his discourse into several distinct orations, each of itself complete. The proposition is sometimes used to express the object to be obtained in consequence of the measure proposed; and in these cases a number of subordinate propositions may be combined for the accomplishment of one. Thus in Burke's speech on conciliation with America, immediately after the exordium and the narration, he says the proposition is peace. Not peace through the me dium of war; not peace to be hunted through the labyrinth of intricate and endless negotiations; not peace to arise out of universal discord, foment ed from principle in all parts of the empire; not peace to depend on the juridical determination of perplexing questions, or the precise marking the shadowy boundaries of a complex government. It is simple peace; sought in its natural course. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
