Book Description
A research program using the high dose rates available from an electron linear accelerator and fast optical techniques to study excitation-deexcitation, trapping, and radiation damage processes is presented. Radiation damage rates in gallium arsenide noncoherent and laser p-n junction diodes are compared by measuring the electrical characteristics and the electroluminescence output before and after irriation with fast electrons. A nonthermal, electrical annealing process is described which is effective in restoring the optical properties of irradiated diodes; the electrical characteristics, which are damaged by the radiation, are not restored by the anneal. To account for the various observations, a model is proposed in which the radiation does not introduce additional nonradiative recombination centers as previously thought but changes the radiative recombination centers to nonradiative. Potassium chloride is also investigated, and the shift in the peak absorption of the F-center with temperature is used to compute effective lattice frequencies. The self-bleaching of the F-centers and the energy required to form an F-center by ionization is experimentally determined as a function of initial F-center concentration and as a function of temperature. A value of 40 eV/F-center is measured at 300K at times of the order of microseconds after a radiation pulse; measurements a few seconds after the pulse yield a higher value due to the self-bleaching of the centers. Book Description
The program used the high dose rate available from an electron linear accelerator to study radiation damage and excitation-de-excitation processes on a fast time scale. Fast optical techniques were used to study the processes occurring, and apparatus and methods were developed for measuring optical absorption and emission at nanosecond speeds. Progress was also made towards the application of high-speed electron spin resonance to these problems. These techniques were applied to a study of de-excitation, from the energy deposited by an electron pulse in ruby and in GaAs, and also to the kinetics of radiation damage in GaAs. In the alkali halides, absorption techniques were used to study the introduction and annealing of F centers; and the trapping of radiation produced electrons to form F centers. Fast optical techniques proved to give an important increase in the understanding of these processes, and are also useful in understanding radiation-induced conductivity in insulators. Optical absorption and photoconductivity measurements were made to study the kinetics of complex defect center formation in silicon: this work is still in a preliminary stage. (Author).

Book Description
For years scientists turned to the CRC Handbook of Laser Science & Technology for reliable data on optical materials. Out of print for several years, that standard-setting work now has a successor: the Handbook of Optical Materials. This new handbook is an authoritative compilation of the physical properties of materials used in all types of lasers and optical systems. In it, scientist, author, and editor Dr. Marvin J. Weber provides extensive data tabulations and references for the most important optical materials, including crystals, glasses, polymers, metals, liquids, and gases. The properties detailed include both linear and nonlinear optical properties, mechanical properties, thermal properties together with many additional special properties, such as electro-, magneto-, and elasto-optic properties. Using a minimum of narration and logically organized by material properties, the handbook's unique presentation simplifies the process of comparing different materials for their suitability in particular applications. Appendices furnish a wealth of other useful information, including lists of the many abbreviations and acronyms that proliferate in this field. The Handbook of Optical Materials is simply the most complete one-stop source available for materials data essential to lasers and optical systems.

Book Description
This book is based mostly on the reports presented at the XVth International lahn-Teller Symposium on Vibronic Interactions in Crystals and Molecules and NATO Advanced Research Workshop Colossal Magnetoresistance and Vibronic Interactions that took place at Boston on August 16-22 of the year 2000. This is the first time the Symposium took place in the USA where recently the giant splash of the attention to the 1 ahn-Teller effect occurred. This tremendous interest to the field all over the world is reflected not only in the numerous publications in many American and European 10urnals, but of the leading scientists from additionally in the Symposium's participation the well known Universities, National Laboratories and industrial companies, which was the largest in the history of the Symposium. The renaissance of the 1ahn-Teller physics is closely related to the three fundamental discoveries in science. The most significant among them is the discovery of high-Tc superconductivity by K. -A. Muller and G. Bednorz, for whom the "1ahn-Teller idea" was the motivation in their search. The result of this search is well known - a wide spectrum of the 1ahn-Teller ion based materials with Tc between 24K and 135K were found. The second discovery is the existence of a new polymorph of carbon - the C60. The microscopic analysis of all physical, chemical and biological properties of the buckyballs is based on 1ahn-Teller type of interactions. The third is colossal magnetoresistance.
