Excerpt from Operating Details of Gas Producers In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded Of this number, some per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and Iignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and Iignite. During the early years of these plants little success was anticipated from the use of bituminous coals and Iignites, but in 1904 and 1905 it was fully demonstrated at the Government testing station at St. Louis that these fuels could be utilized to excellent advantage. 'how ever, although many producer - gas plants in daily operation are using bituminous coal and lignite, many power-plant men are still skeptical regarding the successful commercial use of these fuels. Book Description
Excerpt from Producer Gas In the thirty odd years which I have devoted to the subject of Producer Gas and its applications, it has been my good fortune to make many pleasing friendships here and in other countries. Like most people, I have had my disappointments and troubles, but I have been greatly encouraged and assisted by the kind consideration and co-operation with which I have met. I feel especially indebted to Professor Ayrton, because he first gave me a helping hand in the most disinterested way. In 1881 I exhibited my apparatus at the Paris Electrical Exhibition, and there and then he volunteered to give a lecture on the subject in the Salle du Congres, in order to draw attention to what was being done, and to what it might lead to. I trust that the progress since made may be considered a justification of the interest he then awakened in the subject. I am also indebted to some of the makers of gas-engines. Not unnaturally they were at first disposed to think that it would not be to their interest to work their engines with producer gas, as it was so much weaker than town gas: the reputation of the engine itself was not then fully established, and they were fearful lest by using producer gas they might add to the difficulties with which they had to contend. That was in the days of small engines, when the consumption of gas was not great, and when the cost of the gas was of minor importance. Later they realised that the future of gas-power depended largely on producer gas, and I had the advantage of their co-operation. I am fully conscious that the growing importance of producer gas demands a more exhaustive treatment than I have been able to give it in the limited time at my disposal. Book Description
Excerpt from The Modern Gas-Engine and the Gas-Producer Of the total amount mined, so far, due to exacting require ments with regard to the quality of the marketable fuel, and due to wasteful methods of mining it, there has been left in the ground, inaccessible for future use, or wasted as unmarketable product, an amount even greater than that actually rendered useful. The portion of the fuel consumed for industrial purposes, for generating power, or for metallurgical use, which is by far, the greater portion of the fuel actually rendered useful, has. According to modern standards, been utilized particularly inefficiently; but a tendency toward a strict reform in this respect is afoot, and the problem at present is how to utilize, not only the energy in the good grades of fuel to the greatest possible extent, but also to find new ways for an effective utilization of inferior grades hitherto wasted. The gas-engine is looked upon as a means for effecting reform in the one respect as well as in the other, and, although the final development of the engine has probably not as yet been seen, its theory indicates at present how far an increased economy may be hoped for, just as the steam-engine theory, in the days of Watt, indicated the final limit for efficiency of the steam-engine cycle, toward which the actual performance of the engine has gradually, by steps, approached closer. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Oil and Gas Production To some the drilling of wells may seem the very heart of oil and gas production, but it is in fact merely an operation used also by the miner and the prospector for water, and is not worthy of the disproportionate attention it has received, as compared with that given to the very vital need of developing better methods of locating and extracting. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gas Engine Gas producers are considered briefly from both the practical and theoretical viewpoints, the aim being only to give a clear insight of the principles and methods of manufacturing gas for power purposes. The methods of locating and eliminating troubles have been given in considerable detail. The writer's experience in training something more than a hundred men in the commercial operation of gas and oil engines has been fully convincing as to the need of complete instruction in this particular.
