Thus, in the current research, the authors investigated trust as a key component of attraction based on attitude similarity. Trust was shown to significantly mediate attitude similarity effects on attraction when measured alone (Experiment 1), and alongside positive affect in the participants (Experiment 2A), respect for the partner (Experiment 2B), or inferred partner's attraction to the participants (Experiment 2C). Trust was also shown to have independent effects on attraction when juxtaposed with all three of the traditional mediators of attitude similarity effects (Experiment 3). Attitude similarity -- a cause of attraction -- and the partner's trustworthiness -- a mediator -- were manipulated at two successive occasions, and trust and attraction were measured. Because the partner's trustworthiness was known at Time 2 only, attitude similarity influenced the initial trust and attraction responses and the final trust, but not the final attraction. This experimental evidence for mediation by trust was further confirmed by a modeling of the final attraction on the two manipulations and the three previously measured responses. Specifically, the initial trust and attraction responses originating from attitude similarity bolstered the corresponding responses to the partner's trustworthiness but the initial attraction did not influence the latter trust (i.e., no reverse-causation). Results solidified the previous evidence for mediation of similarity effects on attraction by trust.

Interpersonal Attraction is an important field of psychology concerning why humans are attracted to one another and the multiple factors as to how this attraction occurs. Major studies in the field have looked at dyadic relationships involving a complete range of interactions from first impressions of a stranger to those of long-term couples. These studies focus on reciprocal behavior contingencies and how these relationships grow and change over time. Research suggests there is a positive linear relationship between attitude similarity and attraction. This "reinforcement affect theory" view of attraction has been previously studied with interpersonal attraction, but has lately been challenged by theories that emphasize cognition rather than reinforcement. Focusing on constructs such as attachment style and self-esteem has allowed researchers to gain insight into the human psyche, which will assist in determining how interpersonal attraction occurs. Examining the conceptual processes concerning why people are attracted to individuals may help explain the complexities of attraction. The goals of the current study were to (1) replicate previous studies that show percent of attitude similarity influences interpersonal attraction, (2) to examine the relationship between attachment style and self-esteem, (3) their relationship to interpersonal attraction, and (4) to test for a cognitive interpretation of the attitude similarity - interpersonal attraction relationship. The results show that percent of attitude similarity influences interpersonal attraction and that self-esteem is related to attachment style. The results did not show that attachment style or self-esteem are related to interpersonal attraction. A cognitive interpretation of the attitude similarity 0́3 attraction relationship was not supported.

Effectance motivation -- a will for certainty and a feeling of being able to know and predict -- was proposed in the 1960s as the mechanism underlying the well-known attitude similarity effects on attraction (Byrne, Nelson, & Reeves, 1966). However, this motivation was largely discarded as an explanation when alternative mechanisms, such as positive affect, were identified (e.g., Byrne & Clore, 1970). The presence of alternative mechanisms need not preclude the role for effectance motivation. In the two-dimensional model of interpersonal attraction, cognitively evaluated respect for capacity of and trust in willingness to facilitate goals/needs of each other have been postulated to be necessary for relationship development. However, the extant literature shows supremacy of trust over respect in drawing two strangers together. The present authors hypothesized that trust and respect might drive attraction equally when the partner's liking for the participant is known along with attitude similarity between them. When attitude similarity and partner's liking were manipulated and both respect and trust were measured before attraction in an experiment (N=176), there were similar additive effects on the three responses of trust, respect, and attraction. Importantly, and as hypothesized, trust and respect equally mediated the similarity and liking effects when trust was conceptualized as preceding respect in determining attraction.
