Book Description
Excerpt from On Certain Burial Customs as Illustrative of the Primitive Theory of the Soul Hajji Baba (c. 18) of the man who went through the cere mony of making his entrance over the roof, instead of through the door; for such is the custom when a man who has been thought dead returns home alive. From a passage in. Agathiss we may perhaps infer that the custom is at least as old as the sixth century of our era.3 A custom so remote from our modern ways must necessarily have its roots far back in the history of our race. Imagine a modern Englishman, whom his friends had given up for dead, rejoining the home circle by coming down the chimney, instead of entering by the front door. In this paper I propose to Show that the custom originated in certain primitive beliefs and Observances touching the dead - beliefs and Observances by no means confined to Greece and Rome, but occurring in similar if not identical forms in many parts of the world. Consulting Spirits
Author: Joel Bjorling
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313387648
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
Throughout history, people have been intrigued with spirits, angels, or devas as sources of wisdom and guidance. They are not only interesting as those who possess an insight into events and circumstances, but also as proof of life after death. In this clear and useful reference guide, Bjorling presents a listing of the literature on the various ways in which people of different cultures have consulted spirits—through shamans and oracles, magic, mediums, Voodoo, and psychics. Each chapter contains a general introduction to the respective topic as well as a listing of pertinent books, articles, and dissertations. His survey also includes early spirit contacts in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

The Evolution of the Idea of God: An Inquiry Into the Origins of Religions
Author: Grant Allen
Publisher: Good Press
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 406
Book Description
The Evolution of the Idea of God is a study of humans' belief in God from primitive tribal religions to what Allen considered the more advanced Christian view. It was first published in 1897. The main question of this book is, "How did we arrive at our knowledge of God?" Rather than trying to prove or disprove any claims about the divine, Allen's method simply follows the psychological processes that led humans to religious belief, and further, from a belief in polytheism to monotheism.
