Book Description
The book consists of a collection of essays on aspects of Tulu oral literature and its cultural and religious context. Taking sung poetic ritual texts from the west coast of South India (coastal Karnataka) as her starting point, the author addresses the relationship between text structure and the social and geographical distribution of particular local and subregional cults; questions of gender and genre, of the correlation between narrative and ritual dramatization especially with respect to death, and of success and failure of rituals in the local perception. One essay studies features of South Indian popular cults in a wider perspective. Two of the nine essays discuss historical material relating to Basel Mission activities in the area and compare texts collected in the 19th century with versions collected by the author in the 1980s. The last paper provides a short synopsis of the author's 1995 German monograph on the topic.

This outstanding classic of the Thai language is an entertaining folk epic set in the social panorama of traditional Siam. The tale is a spectacular love story rich in romance, adventure, violence, farce, and magic, and ending in the tragic and enigmatic death of its heroine. Written in lively prose, this new, abridged edition retains every scene, incident, and significant dialogue from the full prize-winning English translation, except for one short section. The great Thai linguist William Gedney believed that “if all other information on traditional Thai culture were to be lost, the whole complex could be reconstructed from this marvelous text.” What others are saying “An excellent English translation of a Thai classic, which in its depth, quality, and readability might very well count as a landmark in Thai studies.”—Peter Skilling, co-editor of How Theravada is Theravada? “Spellbinding”—Jeff Kingston, professor of Asian Studies, Temple University, Japan Highlights • Abridged edition of the full translation published in 2010 • Retains all the scenes and dialogues from the full edition, except for one section • Includes over 30 distinctive drawings from the full translation

Book Description
This is the first book to examine extensively the religious aspects of Chinese alchemy. Its main focus is the relation of alchemy to the Daoist traditions of the early medieval period (third to sixth centuries). It shows how alchemy contributed to and was tightly integrated into the elaborate body of doctrines and practices that Daoists built at that time, from which Daoism as we know it today evolved. The book also clarifies the origins of Chinese alchemy and the respective roles of alchemy and meditation in self-cultivation practices. It contains full translations of three important medieval texts, all of them accompanied by running commentaries, making available for the first time in English the gist of the early Chinese alchemical corpus.

Book Description
The Drama is good, its also good fun, particularly in scenes at the theatre, and the engaging protagonists are easy to root for. Kirkus review In a small Ukrainian village they dance, two beautiful girls from poverty-stricken families. They dont dance for joy or happiness. They dance to supplement their parents meager earnings. Joy seems very far away. These two beautiful young women cant dance in public without attracting attention, sometimes of the worst kind. Trapped in a web of deceit, sex, and tyranny, the two friends flee, seeking a new life in England, where they settle in Londons notorious Soho district. London in the twentieth century proves fertile ground for the two young women. Finally they succeed in their endeavors and reach the heights of success that they could only dream of upon arriving in a new country. Success comes with a price, with both women exposed to setbacks, cunning adversaries, and tragedy. The happiness and love they deserve threatens to elude them. Will they ever dance for joy?
