Book Description
Asian singer-composer Bella Mariposa can't ignore the difficulties in her marriage to physician Daniel Miranda. In hopes of salvaging her union and regaining some sense of balance not only for her, but also for her children, she flees to a spiritual retreat in Hollywood. At the retreat, she meets Father Derek Lindenberg, a priest trying to come to terms with the heavy ordeal of stifling his human feelings to fit the unyielding framework of his priesthood. The two form a close bond and then, the unexpected happens: they fall deeply, irrevocably in love. But how can they survive the grueling twists and turns of the machinery of life? What follows is a gripping story of how the incessant pendulum of our daily lives can act erratically; how seemingly predictable and certain things, like those borne of tradition and religious beliefs, can suddenly be displaced and challenged; and how the forces of love and fate will test the unbending rules of customs, traditions, and religious beliefs. The Velvet Thorn uncovers the subtle shades of emotion that, though muffled by convention, forges its way to escape and express itself in the most wonderful prism of colors that only love can see and understand.

Murm'rings of the Heart
Author: Olivia Villa-Real
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1504956559
Category : Literary Collections

Pages : 150
Book Description
In this fast-paced world of science and technology, we have set ourselves to a never-ending race with time. Weve lost our capacity to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. We have dulled our senses from appreciating the wild flowers along our way that flaunt their beauty and waft their fragrance on the breeze. We cast our vision hurriedly past the inviting pathways into the deep woods that eagerly entice us to take a moments rest. Lest we become robots devoid of feeling, machineries unable to experience bliss, we must elevate ourselves from the mundane to such loftiness of spirit as will enable us to experience and enjoy the true essence of life. This book offers us a sanctuary to rest our weary body and spirit, and its poetry allows us to feel the realities within ourselvestoo often missed, yet are far richer than the physical realities around us that are too commonplace and barren to appreciate. The poems tug at the root of our being, awakening the treasures lurking within uslittle gems too inspiring to miss and too beautiful to forget. This book is a window into my soulthe anima within me that gives me life. It is the true reality of my existencemore than the reality of my physical being. It is beyond what my intellect can reach and what my emotions can inspire. My poetry, which includes my songs, is the fresh breath of my soul; it is the raw expression of what is at my core, borne in the spur of the moment and perfected by inspiration. It is, therefore, in a spirit of love and absolute trust that I welcome you into this sanctuary of my soul since I render myself bare, naked, and vulnerable as I put you in touch with my true reality, which is devoid of fear, pretenses, inhibitions, as well as self-serving needs or purpose.

Latina Lives in Milwaukee
Author: Theresa Delgadillo
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 0252097939
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
Milwaukee's small but vibrant Mexican and Mexican American community of the 1920s grew over succeeding decades to incorporate Mexican, Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central American, and Caribbean migration to the city. Drawing on years of interviews and collaboration with interviewees, Theresa Delgadillo offers a set of narratives that explore the fascinating family, community, work, and career experiences of Milwaukee's Latinas during this time of transformation. Through the stories of these women, Delgadillo caringly provides access to a wide variety of Latina experiences: early Mexican settlers entering careers as secretaries and entrepreneurs; Salvadoran and Puerto Rican women who sought educational opportunity in the U.S., sometimes in flight from political conflicts; Mexican women becoming leather workers and drill press operators; and second-generation Latinas entering the professional classes. These women show how members of diverse generations, ethnicities, and occupations embraced interethnic collaboration and coalition but also negotiated ethnic and racial discrimination, domestic violence, workplace hostilities, and family separations. A one-of-a-kind collection, Latina Lives in Milwaukee sheds light on the journeys undertaken then and now by Latinas in the region, and lays the foundation for the further study of the Latina experience in the Midwest. With contributions from Ramona Arsiniega, María Monreal Cameron, Daisy Cubías, Elvira Sandoval Denk, Rosemary Sandoval Le Moine, Antonia Morales, Carmen Murguia, Gloria Sandoval Rozman, Margarita Sandoval Skare, Olga Valcourt Schwartz, and Olivia Villarreal.
