Book Description
This is a classic real-life story of derring do on the high seas, complete with extreme risk, last-minute ingenuity and many near-misses. Beginning in the 1960s, this book tells of the real life adventures of the author as a boy – a time of boarding schools, long holidays and an unbelievable (to today's parents) amount of freedom and danger. Encouraged by his parents (who lived abroad) to become more independent and self-sufficient, Peter decided to see how far he could get in his family's small open dinghy Calypso. Aged 16, he spent a winter restoring her, before pootling straight out into a force 7 gale and very nearly capsizing, after which he headed back to land to plan even more extreme adventures. Calypso was a Wayfarer, a small (16ft) and very popular class of open dinghy; a boat designed for pottering around coastlines and estuaries during the day. But along with the occasional brave crewmate, Peter managed to sail her across the Channel, through the Bay of Biscay, down the French canals and into the Mediterranean, then up into the North Sea and the Baltic to Oslo, living aboard for three months at a time. These were some of the longest voyages that anyone had ever achieved in an open boat, where (as Peter says) you 'have to be like a tightrope walker, concentrating on balance day and night, fully aware of the consequence of relaxing your vigilance'. He survived huge waves, nine rudder breakages in heavy seas, dismasting, capsizes, and hallucinations caused by sleep deprivation. He also managed it on a tiny budget, working as a farm labourer, hitchhiking everywhere, and at times living on one meal of cereal a day, to save the maximum amount for his boat. Charming, quite British in style, beautifully written and a lovely insight into a seemingly golden time, this is primarily a great read, but will be of huge practical use to anyone wanting to go that bit further in their dinghy. It also includes a lovely Foreword by world-famous yachtsman Brian Thompson.

Book Description
The account of a couple’s voyage in a small sailboat from New York to Greece is unique. They best describe it themselves: “We are both writers, and we were aware that...the passage would affect us deeply and possibly change us in unforeseen ways, both as individuals and as a couple. “We agreed to meld the events, insights, and emotions recorded in our separate logs into one narrative. We realized that it is the internal, private voyage that one remembers long after the memories of dark wind and sunny wave crests have faded.”

Book Description
A great read for any adventurer who is planning to sail across an ocean. This second edition of A Guide to your First Ocean Crossing is both witty and informative, with each chapter packed with useful tips and advice and has been updated to include an expanded section on acquiring a boat, including the alternatives to outright purchase. The author not only covers the practicalities of undertaking a long sea voyage, but also the friendship and support of a small crew several hundred miles from the nearest land and the difficulties of coping with the exhausting combination of isolation, solo night watches and ferocious seas. Family and friends back home are not forgotten, as the writer describes the difficulties of enduring several weeks of separation and how best to keep in touch. The main focus of the book is how best to plan and prepare for a long distance sailing trip, and how to handle the physical and mental challenges of an ocean crossing. But it is also fast moving and upbeat, revealing the wonder of meeting giant ocean mammals in their natural environment, and the unrivalled calm, tranquillity and awe of being the only human being to witness a breathtaking tropical sunrise, with no other vessels for hundreds of miles in any direction. In order to provide a real sense of what it is like to sail across an ocean, the book includes a detailed narrative of a two month trans-Atlantic crossing in the company of two friends. The vivid descriptions of Caribbean sunsets and night watches in the tropics under magnificent star filled skies will transport you to the blue seas and warm sunshine of some of the best sailing areas on earth. Following accounts of visits by dolphins and several sightings of whales, you are eventually carried north and east to the cold seas between the Azores and Northern Europe, where you will experience the battering of Force 9 winds and be pounded by mountainous waves under a series of Atlantic low pressure systems. This highly readable account of the highs and lows of a tough and challenging voyage is fast paced, exciting and at times humorous and uplifting. The appendices which follow provide details of chart positions and daily distances covered. The book also has a useful glossary, a list of some informative websites, and even a few tried and tested sailing recipes.
