Book Description
Moruroa, French Polynesia, French Nuclear Testing Zone. The History, and Environmental Information. A Book on Moruroa Environment. On July 2, 1966 the calm of French Polynesia's Mururoa atoll was shattered by an explosion of unbelievable force. Within a second, the azure tropical sky flashed bright orange, and was ruptured by a towering radioactive cloud that mushroomed into the atmosphere; the placid lagoon was stirred into a tempestuous cauldron, while the coconut trees on the white sand islets were bent by the sheer force of the nuclear explosion. "It's beautiful," said President Charles de Gaulle at the sight of the first of France's 193 nuclear tests in the South Pacific. But for French Polynesia and many of its people, the fallout from decades of nuclear weapons testing is still being dealt with 50 years after the first test

Book Description
"During the last thirty years thousands of Polynesian men and boys worked at Moruroa and Fangataufa, the two atolls in the Pacific where France conducted its nuclear tests. A curtain of silence has so far existed around their experiences, motivations and anxieties. In this report a representative number of former workers and islanders living in the vicinity of the test sites speak out. Their hidden histories and problems are revealed." -- Back cover.

Book Description
"This book is based on interview with people who have worked at Moruroa, or who live on islands near the site. It describes the effects of the nuclear test programme on their lives, and the lives of their families and friends. The interviews took place in 1987, when Dr Andy Biedermann, a Swiss doctor and crew member of the Greenpeace campaign ship Rainbow Warrior in 1985, made two trips to Polynesia, visiting Tahiti and some of the outer islands. At the end of his stay, Dr Biedermann was expelled from the territory for alleged "interference" in French defence affairs. Most of the people interviewed are Polynesian ... This is the first time many of them have spoken out about their experiences. Many fear the possibility of official repercussions, and so their names have been changed to protect them. They describe the environmental and health problems they have witnessed since the test programme began, and the effects it has wrought on their society ..." -- Introduction.

Book Description
"... French nuclear testing at Moruroa Atoll is of particular concern to the peoples of the Pacific. At first the tests were conducted in the atmosphere, and detectable amounts of radiatio were recorded as far away as New Zealand. Since the mid 1970s, however, the tests have been conducted underground. Coral atolls are not designed to withstand nuclear explosions, and it is no surprise that severe fracturing of the atoll should occur. Releases of radioactivity through these fractures are not measured. However, it is inconceivable that they do not occur -- and it is not the people of France, but the peoples of the Pacific who are being affected. The campaign against the French nuclear testing at Moruroa Atoll is, however, just one small part of a much larger campaign. That campaign will end when there are no more nuclear weapons anywhere, when the world is in peace, when the human race lives in harmony with its environment." -- Introduction.

Book Description
France is a Pacific power, with three territories, a military presence, and extensive investments. Once seen by many as a colonial interloper in the South Pacific, by the early 2000s, after it ended nuclear testing in French Polynesia and negotiated transitional Accords responding to independence demands in New Caledonia, France seems to have become generally accepted as a regional partner, even if its efforts concentrate on its own territories rather than the independent island states. But Frances future in the region has yet to be secured. By 2014 it is to have handed over a set of agreed autonomies to the New Caledonian government, before an independence referendum process begins. Past experience suggests that a final resolution of the status of New Caledonia will be divisive and could lead once again to violent confrontations. In French Polynesia, calls continue for independence and for treatment under UN decolonisation procedures, which France opposes. Other island leaders are watching, so far putting faith in the Noumea Accord, but wary of the final stages. The issues and possible solutions are more complex than the French Pacific island population of 515,000 would suggest. Combining historical background with political and economic analysis, this comprehensive study offers vital insight into the intricate history -- and problematic future -- of several of Australias key neighbours in the Pacific and to the priorities and options of the European country that still rules them. It is aimed at policy-makers, scholars, journalists, businesspeople, and others who want to familiarise themselves with the issues as Frances role in the region is redefined in the years to come.
