Book Description
Excerpt from Miscellaneous Stories, Sketches, Etc: Now Chiefly Collected for the First Time Those whose minds were half-formed or unevenly balanced, and not to be looked upon as genuine or worthy pro fessions for rational beings. Samuel Lover, who was born in Dublin 011 Feb. 24th, 1797, surprised his respectable Philistine of a father by showing at a very early age a decided taste for those amusements which were deemed to be beneath the consideration of a stock-broker, and he seriously exasperated the same honest broker by very clearly stating his unhesitating preference for music and art rather than for the contemplation of the rise and fall of stocks and shares - even to the extent of adopting the study of them as a profession. He was a mere infant when he was discovered one day in a distant part of the house strumming on an Old piano the tune Of Moore's song Will you come to the bower? A musical friend of the Lovers' declared the boy had a remarkable aptitude for music, and urged the father to buy him a good piano and have him taught. This was eventually done, and the love of music, engendered in him by his mother's singing Of Irish melodies, was thus promoted and developed. Book Description
The Anarchist Cookbook will shock, it will disturb, it will provoke. It places in historical perspective an era when "Turn on, Burn down, Blow up" are revolutionary slogans of the day. Says the author" "This book... is not written for the members of fringe political groups, such as the Weatherman, or The Minutemen. Those radical groups don't need this book. They already know everything that's in here. If the real people of America, the silent majority, are going to survive, they must educate themselves. That is the purpose of this book." In what the author considers a survival guide, there is explicit information on the uses and effects of drugs, ranging from pot to heroin to peanuts. There i detailed advice concerning electronics, sabotage, and surveillance, with data on everything from bugs to scramblers. There is a comprehensive chapter on natural, non-lethal, and lethal weapons, running the gamut from cattle prods to sub-machine guns to bows and arrows.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of My Lady: A Melange The characters, which the reader, of Spitzbergen-like temperament, may hold as a madness beyond even that of Hamlet's, and wanting utterly in its mood and me thod. For these I have not written. It is only with the gentle and the glad - with those, who, while the winter fire blazes brightly, and the heart is contracted to the circle which surrounds it, are sufficiently rational. Book Description
Excerpt from Ashley, and Other Stories The following stories are now published in a collected form for the first time. To the reader, therefore, they will he virtually as new matter. It will be observed that in the first three stories some of the characters are reproduced, though, in one instance, merely a name - that of Chase. Mrs. Henry Wood intended, had she lived, to weave these stories into one romance. How this would have been accomplished by the experienced hand of the author of "East Lynne" we do not doubt. Fresh plot and new characters would have been introduced into the narrative, so connecting one story with another. But the pen was laid aside before the purpose was carried out; and it only remains for the reader to imagine for himself a chain of circumstances by which these now separate threads would have been gathered into a consecutive and complete whole. We have stated the fact because it undoubtedly adds to the interest of the following pages, which are amongst the most graphic and vigorous of the stories written by Mrs. Henry Wood. One more remark may he made. It may be said by some that the leading incident, the three-fold tragedy, in the story of "Mr. Castonel," is far-fetched and improbable. But truth, we know, is stranger than fiction, and these incidents in the career of the surgeon are founded upon absolute fact. Book Description
Excerpt from The Prose Works of William Wordsworth, Vol. 1 of 3: For the First Time Collected, With Additions From Unpublished Manuscripts The present Editor can only express his satisfaction at being called to execute a task which, from a variety of circumstances, has been too long delayed; but only delayed, inasmuch as the members of the Poet's family have always held it as a sacred obligation laid upon them, with the additional sanction that wordsworth's old and valued friend, henry orarr robinson, Esq., had expressed a wish in his last Will (1868) that the Prose Works of his friend should one day be collected; and which wish alone, from one so discriminating and generous-were there no other grounds for doing so the family of wordsworth could not but regard as im perative. He rejoices that the delay - otherwise to bc regretted - has enabled the Editor to furnish a much fuller and more complete collection than earlier had perhaps been possible. He would now briefly notice the successive portions of these Volumes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Edition Definitive of Les Contes Drolatiques Now for the First Time Completely Translated Into English, Vol. 2 of 2: Collected in the Abbeys of Touraine and Brought Forth Into the Light In the winter when they of the Religion made their first appeal to arms, which was called the Tumult of Amboise, an attorney named Avenelles lent his house, situated on Rue des Marmousets, for the meetings and conventions of the Huguenots, being one of them, yet misdoubting not that the Prince de Conde, La Renaudie, and others had it in mind to kidnap the king. The said Avenelles was a red-bearded knave, smooth as a stick of licorice, pale as the devil, like all pettifoggers who burrow in the dark corners of the parliament-house, - in a word, the scurviest runagate of an advocate that ever lived, laughing at hangings, always ready to sell anything, a very Judas. According to some authors, this limb-of-the-law of shrewd understanding was in this matter half fig, half grape, as will abundantly appear in the present tale.
