Testicular Cancer Research Trends
Author: Paulo V. Brantus
Publisher: Nova Publishers
ISBN: 9781600216671
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 166
Book Description
Seminomas account for about 30-40% of all testicular tumours. These are usually is found in men in their 30s and 40s. The condition is usually localised to the testes, although in about 25% of cases it has spread to lymph nodes. Non-seminomas account for 60% of all testicular tumours; subcategories of these tumours are listed below. Non-seminoma tumours often contain more than one of the following cell types: Testicular cancer is an abnormal, rapid, and invasive growth of cancerous (malignant) cells in the testicles. Embryonal carcinoma (about 20% of testicular cancers) occurs in 20-30 year olds and is highly malignant. It grows rapidly and spreads to the lung and liver. Yolk sac tumour (about 60% of all testicular cancers in young boys). Teratomata (about 7% of testicular cancers in adult men and 40% in young boys). Choriocarcinoma is rare. Stromal cell tumours are a kind of tumour that is made of Leydig cells (testosterone-secreting cells), Sertoli cells (cells where sperm matures), and granulose cells. These tumours account for only 3-4% of all testicular tumours. However, they do make up nearly 20% of all childhood testicular tumours. These tumours may secrete a hormone -- estradiol -- that can cause one of the symptoms of testicular cancer, gynecomastia (excessive development of breast tissue). This book presents leading-edge research in the field.

Furthering Precision Medicine and Cancer Prevention Through Novel Insights in Molecular and Chemical Carcinogenesis
Author: Jamie Bernard
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832555683
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 88
Book Description
The best way to reduce the overall cancer burden is to prevent cancer through a healthy lifestyle, pharmacological strategies, or decreased exposure to environmental carcinogens. Molecular chemical carcinogenesis, identification and evaluation of carcinogenicity hazards, and precision prevention drug discovery have highlighted key cellular, genetic, and epigenetic mechanisms of carcinogenesis that can inform prevention strategies on multiple levels. In this Research Topic, we propose to generate a collection of articles that discuss the main and newly-explored cellular, genetic, and epigenetic targets for cancer prevention, including the immune system. We aim to gain an in-depth understanding of cancer prevention from the molecular to the epidemiological consensus. In particular, these articles will focus on identified mechanisms in tumor initiation, promotion, and malignant transformation for precision prevention and environmental health.

Fertility Control
Author: Ursula-F. Habenicht
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642020623
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
The world’s population is growing at an unsustainable rate. From a baseline ?gure of one billion in 1800, global population is predicted to exceed nine billion by 2050 and 87. 8% of this growth will be localized in less developed countries. Such uneven population growth will yield a harvest of poverty, malnutrition, disease and en- ronmental degradation that will affect us all. Amongst the complex mixture of political, social, cultural and technological changes needed to address this issue, the development of improved methods of fertility regulation will be critical. The inadequacy of current contraceptive technologies is indicated by recent data s- gesting that the contraceptive needs of over 120 million couples go unmet every year. As a direct consequence of this de?cit 38% of pregnancies are unplanned and more than 50% end in an abortion, generating a total of 46 million abortions per annum particularly among teenagers. If safe, effective contraceptives were ava- able to every couple experiencing an unmet family planning need, 1. 5 million lives would be saved each year (UNFPA 2003). Progress in contraceptive technology should not only generate more effective methods of regulating fertility, but should also provide a range of methods to meet the changing needs of the world’s population. Contraceptive practice was revo- tionized in 1960 in the US and 1961 in Europe by the introduction of the oral contraceptive pill by Gregory Pincus, MC Chang and colleagues, based on fun- mental hormone research conducted in Germany.
