Text of Tapia Zenteno's Noticia de la lengua huasteca, copied by an unidentified secretary, and forwarded, with cover letter dated November 2, 1857, to the Minister of Development, Bernardo Flores, in Mexico City, by the governor of Veracruz, Manuel Zamora. Tapia Zenteno's work on the Huastec language, first published in Mexico in 1767, contains explanations and examples of parts of speech and verb tenses, as well as a Huastec "dictionary"--Really a list of selected vocabulary. Also translated into Huastec are a catechism (including the Lord's Prayer, the Apostles' Creed, Ten Commandmants, and the deadly sins); and a series of doctrinal questions, written by the Jesuit Bartolomé Castaño. Zamora's cover letter explains that the ms. was sent to him by the jefe político of Tampico who, in turn, had received it from a justice of the peace in Ozuluama.
