Excerpt from Notes on Medical Matters and Medical Men in London and Paris It was not with any expectation of making a book, that I commenced my Notes on Medical Matters and Medical Men in Europe, which, for more than two years, have oc cupied so much space in the western journal OF med icine and surgery. The letters were written to one of the Editors, and, at first, without any object beyond his personal gratification. They were deemed by him worthy of publication, and forthwith I was enrolled Foreign Core respondent of the Journal. In the midst of engrossing studies, which left me but little leisure, I was induced to continue the correspondence, not more by the evidence afforded me that my contributions were well received, than by the assurance of the working Editor, that they lightened his onerous labors. The correspondence, com menced and continued in this spirit, has, at length, grown into a Volume. As the successive numbers were passing through the press, a few extra sheets were obligingly set apart for the author by the publishers, and these make the volume now presented to the reader. A longer novitiate was required then at present, and few spent less than from three to seven years from home. As was but natural, attach ments were formed to British institutions, British laws and customs, and many friendships were firmly established between individuals. All these bonds and convictions and personal advantages were to be sundered, or materially weakened, by engaging in the rebellion, yet few hesitated. Animated by patriotism and persuasion of right, most of the returned Medical absentees sustained with all their influence and ardor the movement which at first seemed almost a hopeless struggle. And this was more of a sacrifice than is now apparent, for a very large proportion of the gentry - the wealthiest of their patients - adhered to the side of the mother country. Though appearing now as detached papers, they are founded chiefly upon notes made in the course of twenty years of medical practice in London. Excerpt from Medical Sentinel The method in vogue in most courts of calling expert medical men is no credit to the legal or the medical fraternity. Whether the proposition is one that the defendant was insane when he committed the alleged crime; or that the plaintiff seeking to recover from a rich corporation is a malingerer and a hypocrite; whether the man died from poison administered by the defendant or from natural causes, there can, it is sad to say, generally be found so-called experts who will swear whichever way they are paid to swear. Such witnesses are never prominent members of the profession. But whenever such testimony is given, which is influenced by the dollars received from one side or the other, a reflection of a discreditable character is cast upon the entire profession to which such witnesses belong. The com ments of the newspapers - their jokes in their funny columns - te garding the matter do not merely reflect on the individual physicians who permit themselves to be placed in an equivocal position, but on all other physicians in the community. Physicians are human, but not more than one in a hundred will be influenced in his testimony a hair's breadth by the fact that he receives fees for his services from one side or the other. But the one in a hundred - assuming that that is a proper proportion - is willing to be influenced, and the lawyer who approaches him outlines in every particular the sort of questions he will ask, on direct examination, and indicates the sort of answers he desires in return.
